I am thinking of upgrading my stock ignition on my '11 Sahara to the Performance Distributors Firepower Ignition Kit 3.8L (Live Wires & Screamin Demon Coil) and performance plugs. My concerns are: how this might upset the engine computer controlling engine timing, and if the extra ignition voltage would erode the spark plug electrodes faster. If anyone has any experience or thoughts on this setup, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks-
I did the DUI Livewires and NGK Iridium IX plugs in my JKU and it made a noticeable difference (but I was replacing OEM plugs and wires with 90k on them). I can't comment on the coil, though. I opted not to get it just to save some cash at the time.
Updated info on JK ignition systems. I ran into a Jeep mechanic yesterday. He works for a well respected Chrysler/Jeep dealership and he is pretty reliable as a source of good tech information on JK's. I asked him about the ignition upgrades I was considering and he cautioned against the hot coil and Iridium spark plugs because they can/may cause the "check engine" warning light to trigger unless the vehicle's computer is recalibrated with aftermarket software. He gave a thumbs up to the Live Wires and thought that was a good idea.
The weather was nice last week so I went ahead and replaced my Champion (RE14PLP5) OEM spark plugs with MOPAR spark plugs and C9300 Live Wires. I used heat shields over the spark plug boots to give them added heat protection. The old plugs were in ok shape with only 30k miles but the wires showed some heat fatigue. The new wires look great. It was difficult uncoupling the passenger side spark plug wires until I sprayed them with silicon WD-40. Once the boots were sprayed really good, them came right off. I can't say for sure if the spray did the trick or not but if you're having trouble, it couldn't hurt to give it a try. I drove my Jeep locally for around 100 miles and saw an check engine code. As soon as my code reader arrives, I'll check into this further and let you know if the ignition upgrades caused it.
