JK motors

Why does everyone makefun of/talk smack on the JK's motor? Is it because they came out of a minivan or are they really pieces of crap? I am looking at getting like an 07 or 08 JK "X" S package but a bunch of people dog the motor. Please help

There is nothing inherently wrong with the 3.8. It's been used in many other vehicles for the past 20 years and a mini van was among them. Some people add larger tires without re-gearing and then feel that the engine is at fault. Chrysler has plans to replace the 3.8 with a 3.6 in 2012.

Lots of modern engines in similarly sizes SUVs and trucks have close to 300 horsepower. The Wrangler is closer to 200.

I disagree that it's "underpowered"--it's the most powerful engine ever in a Wrangler as I understand it--it's just not "highly powered". Plus, once people add big wheels/tires without making some other changes to compensate, it starts to feel pretty anemic.

If you're expecting to blaze off the line at stop lights or fly down the highway and close to 100 mph, the Wrangler's not for you.

As Daggo noted, there are plans for a more powerful engine in 2012. If you've got all day to read people's rants on this topic, search "Pentastar" in this forum.

The reason most folks around here dog them is that we all wish we had a 6.1L Hemi instead.......

The performance is fine as long as you didn't just have a V8 and expect the jeep to perform the same. I'm sure the 4 door feels a bit more underpowered because that's alot more weight for the 3.8 to drag around, but my 2 door does just fine.

greenenvy, thanks for pointing that out to me.. I guess I have been having multiple "senior" moments scratching my head wondering why everyone kept dogging the 3.8. I had the 4.0 in my YJ and TJ and really have liked the 3.8 better. Thanks to you, I get it. I have always had the two door model and have not gone larger than a 265 tire so I have never really had a problem with the power. That extra weight and size of the unlimited, that appears to be the "favorite" on this forum, would make a difference in the performance even stock. Thanks again for pointing that out.

If you get a 2dr with a manual you'll find that there is enough power.

The 4.0 is hands down a better engine, but there is nothing wrong with the 3.8. I think you'll find it more then adequate if you do it right.

I mean come on, you know you are getting a Porsche. It's a jeep.

I've driven the 2 door and 4 door back to back and concur with what you're saying. The 4 door is a slouch compared to the 2 door.

I just got a 2010 Wrangler a couple weeks ago and I must say I would like to have alittle more get up and go. That being said it does just fine as a daily driver.

While the "IDEA" of a HEMI wrangler sounds great, as most of us use them as a DD I think the fun of having that much power would eventually having us wishing for a different set-up. The cost of gas alone has people complaining now-and with that much power/torque how big would the tires get and how low would the gears go? Talk about crawling!!!!

Funny thing about the "mini Van" motor. My Xwifes 05 grandcarvan would pull a 3200lb camper loaded with a weeks worth of supplys with 4 kids and 3 adults in it with no problem. Never had any problems with the motor. only problems were with the brakes and tranny getting hot in the mountains.

Personally, I think the minivans are trying to make themselves feel better by using a Wrangler engine.

i've posted 0-60 times and 1/4 mile info for a stock 3.8 auto jeep vs. a stock auto 4.0 jeep. the 3.8 is the winner in both categories. the 4.0 makes less horsepower and peak torque, but makes about 5 lb/ft more than the 3.8 where the 4.0 makes it's peak torque. any arguments against the 3.8 are pointless.

The JK I drove was an auto and when you pressed down it moved it moved better than my ranger manual. I don't know if I would want a manual or auto though my left knee is Fed up but love the feeling of going around a corner and down shifting.
