I usually spend my time over on the YJ forum...drive a 95 Sahara currently.
Ok, gratuitous pic included, but enough of that.
I am looking into getting a JK...or whatever is available in 2017.
I have a few questions. First off, anyone know updated info on whatever 75th anniversary edition they will have? I will likely get something like that if it will be produced. I've seen rumor type things, and that may be all they are.
Second question: how are JKU autos on the highway. My Sahara is a 6 banger and does well, although in 5th on steeper upgrades, my speed will slowly creep down even when floored. Does this sorta thing happen to JKUs (or JKs for that matter), or do they have pretty good highway capability on upgrades?

Edit: Bah, this was meant for the gen JK forum. My bad.
The JK with a 3.6 will be night and day coming from a YJ. Not that there is anything wrong with square headlights. Its going to pass cars when you tell it to, and it is going to ride a million times better.
the YJ 4.0 had what, 140hp? The 3.6 has double that. The auto trannys are nothing more than awesome. I used to tow a small trailer loaded down with a quad and camping gear, and I kept up with the Cummins tow rigs in our group that never go under 85.
The YJ is my daily driver now. I will keep it for fun trips...you really can't beat the rough ride and manual for a fun ride...I guess it's a leaf spring thing, haha.
Anyway, my plan is to get a JK as a daily driver. I feel it's ok to get an auto since I'll still have my 5 speed YJ, heh. But right now I'm weighing the JK vs JKU option. Good to hear the unlimited should still do ok on the highway.
And yah, the 4.0 is bulletproof, but only 180hp. The 4 bangers are 123hp...sorta a sore subject with some over on the YJ forums.
Yah I have put a lot of effort into my YJ. To the point that it will be tough to ever let it go unless it outright just dies.
Not too recently, I was really close to ditchin it all and selling it off at a loss and picking up a used JK. Glad I didn't.
Not because I dislike JKs of course...obviously since I'm talking about getting a JK. I only have one negative thing to say about JKs...no half door option. I know the doors come off, but the half doors on the _J models are so damn cool imo.
Dral97 - Having had two YJ's in the past ('91 5spd 4.0L, soft top no A/C and a '93 Auto, hard top, with A/C) along with my current TJ and JKU Sahara, I can comfortably say that my JKU Sahara is without a doubt, absolutely the best highway vehicle I have ever owned. I has good highway manners and while it can easily keep up with the (in a hurry) highway crowd, doing so will pull the MPG does (it is still like pushing a brick through the wind).
Of all the updated features of the vehicle, the seat is it's best feature. When I was looking at the vehicles on my dealers lot, when I first sat in it, I was 95% certain that this vehicle was going home with me. The test drive up I75 made that 100%. About a month after I bought the JKU, I drove it on a trip to Texas and made the drive back in one day (910 miles in 14 hours) and without the normal back/neck pains I had experienced in my most recent highway vehicles (the TJ has not been more than 100 miles from my house in the the slightly more than 1 year I have owned it.
Don't sell the YJ. I had an 89 YJ that I owned twice. Almost a 3rd time but the 2nd owner I sold it to wanted more than I sold it to him for. That was nuts. AND, it was powered by 4 angry squirrels. 5 speed, rough ride but I loved it and wish I still had it. That said, I love my JK. It's an auto with the 3.8 but still does fine on the flat Florida roads. Even with 4:10 gears and 35's.
The ride and comfort is much better with the jk and if you get the 3.6L it is better than the i6 in gas mileage. For reliability , thats to be deteremined
