Just ordered an Android head unit - Joying Jeep specific

After looking at these Android head units for over a year, I finally pulled the trigger:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IB8V2AO..._psMKxbQQQ1S36

Should be in on Friday, I will post pics and let you all know how it turns out.

I chose this since it was Jeep specific, should be relatively plug and play. Most of these Android units are from China and just sold by various different resellers like Joying, Auto Pumpkin, Eonon, RoadNavi.com, etc.

I chose Joying based on reading all about these on XDA, Reddit, and various car forums (like Wranglerforum.com) Joying seems to fair better than the rest. And it was fulfilled by Amazon and on Prime. So I figured if I had any problems, Amazon would help out.

What factory unit do you have? Have the factory amp/sub?

I have a 2016 JKU Freedom Edition with the 430N with the base 8 speaker system, not the 9 speaker premium Alpine system.

I have replaced all 8 speakers, four with the 77Kick10 speakers, the 2 dash speakers with the Super Tweeters from Quadratec, and the 2 in the soundbar with some Kickers. However I think I am going to remove the Kickers (that are not the 77kick10) in the soundbar.

I do have the 10 inch Mopar Kicker subwoofer and amp which ties into the front drivers side speaker. Kicker said their VSS upgrades would only work with a factory head unit. So that is a concern.

I did ask the lady from carstereochick.com and she said she didn't see any reason why it would not work with the Kicker sub.

I think the main issue is with the factory amp that runs off canbus so with out that I would think you should be fine. I am in the process of getting this same type of upgrade done but have the factory amp. Had to order a pac adapter for the canbus amp/steering wheel controls

I have seen other threads where people had the premium Alpine system and it had no sound with the Joying units. But I saw somewhere that someone contacted Joying and they sent a different CANBUS adapter and it worked properly.

Gonna keep an eye on this. Does any one know where the factory amp is located?

Just got an email from Joying, sounds promising:

"The item you ordered should come with two different harness, one is for models with basic configuration, the other one is for the models that have factory amplifier. Please use the right harness for your car. And if your car have can-bus system, please remember to connect the can-bus decoder to the harness which you use."

Ordered some parts from Amazon to help with the install:

Got this hoping I could just reuse the Jeep factory GPS:

Pc-case 0.5ft Rf Electrical Wire Connector Fakra "C" Plug to SMA Male Straight Assembly Extension Coaxial Cable Rg174 15cm for GPS Antenna https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OOD2TGW..._dA8MxbK62KCZG

And this hoping to run an extra USB port or 2 to the glove box area:

AmazonBasics USB 2.0 Extension Cable 2-Pack - A-Male to A-Female - 3.3 Feet (1 Meter) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NH13Q8W..._lB8MxbDFPE5A4

I was looking at putting one of these units in my Tiguan. I really couldn't pull the trigger. I'm interested in hearing how you like it.

The fact that it is built to fit the car is awesome. I love that it's android and you can add apps. These features alone really put the mainstream head unit manufacturers to shame. They are way behind.

What put me off is that people were saying they have a 30 second boot up time and that the radio reception is terrible.

Well I plan on using the remote start as I walk up to counteract the 30 second startup delay. And I literally never listen to regular radio. So I don't care about that. I will probably only listen to Google Play Music, Pandora, or something over Bluetooth

Well it arrived, but it is not installed yet. I had ordered an adapter from Amazon to keep the USB port in the console, but it did not arrive.

It also was overcast and thundering, and I thought it was going to rain, but it did not. I will probably not wait on the adapter, and go ahead and install it in the morning. Here are some pics of the package:

I bought the low end radio planning on upgrading. I bought a CD slot mount and a cheap $80 8" Android tablet that links either with the Bluetooth or via the 3.5 mm plug. The tablet has GPS and I use Waze and Locus Map. That ought to hold me over while trying to figure out some short of the $3000 JVC unit.

Easy installation, super simple. Hardest part was getting the stupid clips holding the stock radio and GPS onto the 430N off the 430N.

I used an adapter from AMAZON to use the existing Jeep GPS

http://imgur.com/Jcn7VOi

I got it hooked up and tested the internal mic and it was ok, but callers on the other end said I was louder with the external mic. I put it on the Mopar Jeep handles, and ran the cord down the pillar and over the instrument cluster, way easier than I expected

http://imgur.com/6wZkqyQ

I did not need my USB extenders I purchased, the ones that came with it were long enough to reach in the glove box

http://imgur.com/HotjKFl

http://imgur.com/jpVT8S0

http://imgur.com/h3WVB4x

Put the iPod in there and it does get recognized by the Music app, but it does not show the song titles, just iTunes jibberish titles:

http://imgur.com/FufsjgG

In the advanced settings I found a way to add an iPod app, but it crashes immediately.

RAM:

Flash memory

http://imgur.com/fe9k3HZ

It recognized a 128 GB microsd card I put in, Samsung Evo Plus

http://imgur.com/qpOrCDp

Not sure what format it needs. I just out it in my computer and added MP3s, but it did not recognize it. From the head unit I wiped the card and then it recognized it and showed the full 128 GB available.

Easily changed the boot logo to Jeep

Interesting you say that. I thought it was cheap for what it is.

It definitely sounds better than stock, probably not as good as Kenwood or Pioneer, but night and day over stock.

I don't listen to FM or AM radio, but I tried it and it sounded fine, no static.

I am using Google Play Music and Pandora and it sounds great.

And the iPod still has weird track names but it is showing album art now

I think it seems cheap compare to aftermarket option that are out there. Always glad to hear about another successful install just wish you had the factory amp to confirm that it would work. Are you using your phone as a hotspot for it? Did you get a OBDII reader to use with it? Nice spot on the gps adapter I like that idea

I do not have the Alpine premium upgrade. However if you look at the adapter that came with the Joying radio it has 2 different attachments, one marked as "Amp"

I did not use that one, but I believe if you do have the Alpine premium upgrade, then you would use that connection. I used the other connection with no label and the "AMP" one is just hanging loose.

From my driveway the Joying easily picks up my house wifi. I am downloading my Google Play Music playlists to the microsd card. Interesting to note the Google Play Music app version on my Joying and my Samsung S7 Edge are the same version, but an option is missing on Joying.

Here is the Joying radio Google Play Music app

And here is the app from my Samsung S7 Edge

Notice the Joying is missing the option to specify the storage location. Maybe this is due to my phone being on Android 6.0 and Joying being on Android 5.1.

However it appears to be working, because if I go to the "Manage Downloads" section on the Joying it shows to have used 11 gigs, which is way more free space than the Joying has without using the microsd card.

Another interesting tidbit, the Storage app does show the 128 GB microsd card, but it doesn't show any space being used. When clearly there is space being used. Still shows 120 GB available.

However if I go to the File Manager and view the SD card, it shows a folder for Google Play Music so I know it is using the card.

On the road I will be using my phone as a Hotspot. Once I get all my music downloaded, I really shouldn't burn up too much data.

Also I tried turning off my Hotspot on my phone halfway through my route and Google Maps was still able to guide me home, so it must be able to work with the GPS only. I would assume it can't look up new stuff though. Have not tried to download offline maps yet.

I did not get an ODB2 adapter yet. I was waiting to see how the overall head unit worked before adding stuff on to it. However everything seems pretty good so I will pick one up at some point.

I think it is stuff like this that exemplifies where JDubs is coming from. Incidentally, I had the same reaction as him when I saw the price. For $200 I might experiment, but $400 is above my ceiling. From my experience with Chinese knockoffs, they work, but they do everything at least 10% worse than a "real" product.

I assume the UI is 98% stock Android, so that helps them out tremendously. The question then becomes, are you provided software updates from Google, or from Yao Shian Chi Corp or whoever the hell allegedly made this?

I look forward to seeing how this turns out longterm especially with UI interaction and stability.

Are you installing the Jeep specific model or a universal unit?

Well I don't see those errors as a big issue. For one, it is still working, it just shows the storage incorrect, but it may just not be refreshed or something, I have only spent a few hours with the unit.

Also Joying's defense, they don't claim to support 128 GB cards, I just tried it to see if it would work. I think they recommend 32 GB, but I saw someone got a 64 GB so I figured I would try a 128.

Regular app updates will come from the Play Store, and several of the apps have already got an update. As far as Android version that would come from Joying. It is currently on 5.1, and yes 6.0 is the newest version of it, but like only 13% of phones are actually on Android 6.0:

http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/...on-10-percent/

So it is not really a big deal to be on Android 5.1. From reading various forums Joying will release updates and bug fixes.

Steering wheel controls sort of work. The volume controls on the right hand side work perfect in all apps. The middle nipple on the volume side changes source. Which works but for me is pointless since I am using apps for music. The source switches from Radio to DVD to Audio Video In, etc.

The track change buttons on the left hand side work in the default apps. It works on the Bluetooth music app, they work on a CD playing, or DVD. They are backwards though. Normally up goes forward and down goes backward but it is flipped. It will not work for apps like Google Play Music or Pandora. Oddly enough the middle nipple button on the left hand side works as a Mute button and works on every app, including Google Play Music and Pandora.

Also if you press the phone button on the steering wheel it brings up the Bluetooth phone app on the Joying. Not sure if it will actually answer or hang up, haven't tried that yet.

I think that you can program the SWC on the head unit. Don't remember how but I have seen that it can be done. I also seem to remember that you can program a long press and double the function.

You can, there is an app there, but it is a bit confusing. I will take a picture next time I am in it. However from reading on XDA, I don't think anyone has gotten the track controls to work in an app like Google Play Music or PANDORA or Spotify.

So if I can't get that to work, then I am fine with just volume and Mute. But I will give it a shot.
