LOL Gas Mileage

Tonight I had a chance to do a little experiment with gas mileage.

I have a 2013 JK 6sp. with 3.73s. 265/75/16 Duratracs @ ~38psi

There is a steady WNW wind tonight at 12-13 MPH and we have a long flat section of bridge here that runs east to west for more than 10 miles.

I set the cruse at 70 MPH heading East. 22.4 MPG on the lie-o-meter.
Heading back home West bound 16.1 MPG on the readout.

I actually laughed out loud. I have heard the saying "aerodynamic like a brick but Jesus...

Anyone else actually experienced the same?

I feel the wind like crazy on mine and can believe it. I'm still in the break in period so I haven't been beating on it, but I've been getting 19 and change on my "lie-o-meter". About 50/50 highway and city....with 20 miles in an off-road park.

I don't care since I didn't buy it for outstanding MPG, but the highway performance is laughable in the wind.

Around town it's great and actually gets respectable mpg for a 4x4. YMMV...greatly

Then there's hills. Mine gets 18-20 on flats and 14-15 on anything even remotely hilly. That 3.6 is one sensitive puppy when it comes to mpg.

I hate the wind and hills and not so great fuel mileage at times but it is still worth dealing with it all to drive our Jeeps. We would not have anything else.

I'm averaging about 20mpg with a mix of city and hwy and can average about 25mpg on the hwy sticking to the speed limit. This is during the winter in my 2012 JKU stock with the hard top.

2010 Sport JK, 3.8, 3.73 gears, 6 speed. The Jeep came with factory steel wheels and 16 tires. The previous owner replaced wheels and tires with 17" factory alloy wheels and tires. After recalibration the speedo and GPS are in line with each other.

Fuel mileage for normal daily driving is 17-18 mpg. Strictly on the interstate @ 70 mph, 21-22 mpg. This is hand calculated. The on board computer is actually closer on this Jeep than any other vehicle I've driven. It is never more than 1 mpg off and usually too high.

I've all but stopped hand calculations. I've found that just subtracted 1 mpg from what the monitor says is pretty accurate.

Drove east for an hour yesterday and got 20... drove back and got 16. Having the wind to your back is a good thing.

80ish MPH highway. E10 gas going, E0 coming back. 3.73 with a 6-speed.

I have a 2012 JK 6sp. with 3.73s. I got pretty much the same numbers, 16.4 going west from Montreal to Toronto, and when I came back to Montreal, going east I got 21.7 mpg

How are you guys getting 20+? The only time I see 17+ is when i reset it and drive on relatively flat ground at a constant speed.

I haven't reset it in over a week and I'm averaging 16.0 mpg. If I do any driving sort of resembling spirited driving, it drops to like 15.~ mpg... I only have 810 miles on it. I'll see if it gets better and I'll also try 100% gas the next tank.

BTW 2014 JKUR 3.73 auto.

I haven't reset mine in 2 months. My average is a bit over 20. I don't know why. Maybe because of my shifts. I shift at about 2000 rpm most of the time. It's happy with it.

I had a 2012 JK Sport with 33s and the 3.73 gears. (almost) Always averaged 18-22 regardless of winds, hills, or speeds. I've never payed much attention to the tach but I'd guestimate low 2k shift points like Gord P

Is that in US gallons or imperial gallons (CA)?

I'm bored at work right now so bare with me while I type out the math.

US gallons have 3.78 liters
CA gallons have 4.54 liters

20 mpg (US) would be 5.29 miles/litre
20 mpg (CA) would be 4.40 miles/litre

20 CA mpg would be 16.6 US mpg
20 US mpg would be 24.0 CA mpg

Is this right? This is also all based on whether or not you mentioned CA mpg or US mpg. Or even if they calculate them differently

Looks like he's going by the evic. Here in Canada, it reads in litres per 100kms. If you switch the evic out of metric, it reads in US mpg. 20 US MPG = 11.8 litres per 100km = 24 Imperial MPG (Approx)

Ok, for some odd reason I thought it would read imperial miles per gallon...

Thanks for the clarification.

Have had mine since June 2013 and never seen anything past 16 mpg; and that was MONTHS ago. The past 4 or so months I've been averaging less than 14.

2014 JKUR auto stock. I get about 17mpg on the highway now that it's broken in. I'm not sure what Americans are paying for gas, but I pay about $1/litre or about $3.73/US gallon. I used to drive a truck, so I'm getting about the same mileage, probably better.

I always drive stick and I always get over the EPA MPG Highway estimate for all my vehicles...save for this one...but I still do fairly well. I haven't had the Jeep over 3,000 rpms and I'm usually in 6th over 40.
