Mopar Remote Start Key Question

I just had a remote start installed on my 2014 Jeep Wangler Unlimited. When I got it back they had given me my two new keys but not my original key. Kind of made me mad as I marked on the sheet that I wanted all original parts back. The reason I ask this is I thought or would think that those keys could be reprogrammed so I could have a spare set of keys with out paying the $150 for a new set, I know it wouldn't have the remote start but it would work and possibly the remote lock/unlock would work and that would be fine with me. The dealership is telling me that it will not work and the "Tech" said he is pretty sure that it doesn't work. Anyone know if this is possible? Thanks.

The original keys can definitely be programmed to work. (At least they could on my 2008) At the very least, they're great as spares, hiders, or significant-other keys.

I'd be pisssed.

Oh I am. I think someone might be trying to pull a fast one on me but I will make sure I get my key back.

If you wrote it on the work order you have proof. They are obliged to provide them for you, whether they work or not.

I have a Service Manager that is always up front with me. He told me in order to program the 2 original keys along with the 2 keys with remote start button on my Son's 2014 Sport, his tech would have to remove/clear the factory "skim" and then program all 4 keys. He came right out and said it is real chancey deleting the factory skim and might result in real problems getting any and or all keys programmed. He asked me to please accept from the dealership a free remote button key programmed with my other two remote button keys that came with the OEM remote start kit (leaves me with 3 remote button keys) if I would just forget the idea of trying two program those original keys. I took his offer so now my Son has 3 remote button keys and the two original keys that will just unlock the door mechanically.

Son and I both have 2014 JK's. Mine is a Sahara, his a Sport.

Are you sure about that? Can transponder chip keys that have already been programmed to your vehicle, be cleared and re-programmed?

When I had mine installed, it came with a "brain" that the keys are coded to.

The "original" keys are useless except for mechanically unlocking the doors. They'll fit in the ignition tumbler, but they're not programmed correctly any longer and won't start the car. So beyond having a spare hide-a-key, the original keys are trash at that point.

I personally junked my original 2 keys and just had a flat (no-electronics) spare cut to open the doors if I lock my keys inside.

If you get those keys back, you'd have a set that was cut already (unless you had the tumblers changed). Then you could go online and get the key's electronics and program the old key with the new electronics. To reprogram the old set, they'd charge you another hundred bucks per key to wipe them with the computer.

So I guess I should of rephrased the question to: can the key be reprogrammed and can the fob be reprogrammed.

@chisox711 - Did you ask them to do this or did they just do this? Also area your from the Chicagoland area? If you are what Dealership did you go to?

@ Everyone else - Thanks for the info so far.

This is my second JK. I have the set of old keys from my totaled JK and wanted the dealership to zap them so I can use the electronics in a blank key, cut for my new JK. They say it wasn't possible. This is after I read in the manual and online that a programmed key cannot be reprogrammed except by first being erased by the dealership. I have a feeling it can be done (erased and reprogrammed) but my dealership isn't very knowledgeable about it and say they can't do it.

For you, I say, get the old keys back and go online and get new boards for the keys so you can reprogram them yourself. This way you can have a spare set that will do everything but remote start. In the least, you have a set of keys that will open the door in case you happen to lock your good set in the Jeep. Just tell the dealership that's what you want the old keys for.

It doesn't matter if they will work or not , they should have given your keys back .I would be pissed and I would definitely get my keys back .What are they going to do with your keys ? If they no longer have your old keys , sounds like they need to give you new keys . They should say ," Were sorry sir , we would like to give you a new set of remote start keys to replace the keys we accidently got rid of ". Then you say "thank you ", and that should be it !

The dealer installed remote start on mine. I bought the keys thru them. They cut and programmed them and gave them to me. Originals still work. They are tagged to your vin and should still work. I now have 4 keys. 2 that only unlock/lock and 2 that unlock/lock and start.

Anyone, bigbeave1 & chisox711 I am looking at your guys, tell me the dealership you went to so I might be able to contact this dealership and ask them questions. I am in the process of getting the key back and if not they will just replace the key.

@ VIN - What is this board you are talking about? I get it is the Fob board but is there any specific name it goes by? Let me know if you can.

They told me they had a "problem" trying to program my original key, I asked they guy where it was he said "sitting in my tool box" I told him I wanted it back. They did caution me that if I try to use the key in the ignition, it will lock the system; however, yes it will work as a "key" to unlock the door, so I will be sticking it in a hideaway for the time when I lock my key in the car.

Well I got my key back today and I am going to call the service manager tomorrow and talk to him about this all. Maybe I can get an answer from him.

There is a service bulletin 18-003-14 dated 1/30/14 that explaines why this happens. If the WCM is replaced before the ECM gets a new flash the security information will become corrupt in the pcm. After reading the bulletin it sounds like they should replace the orignal keys under warranty.
