Oh the Horror!!!

So this evening the wife and I got in "The General" my 13JKU Freedom in CG.

To my abrupt surprise, while the garage door was elevating I heard a loud POP and then CRASHHHH and then thousands of tiny clinging.

I knew it would be ugly when I opened to the driver door to find the thousands of tiny pieces of whats left of my back window

Now we will spend the rest of my evening like this

Im sad and feeling sheepish. I hate to think I alone in this experience so does any body have some advice for replacement? I have the back window wiper but I don't really care if that goes away...

Thoughts and condolences welcome.

This is really terrible, I hope that it doesn't ruin your Holiday Season! Maybe a case of Budweiser will help........

At least now you can put a new decal on your new window. Think of the positive side.

All the well wishes are great! Thank you.

Yes the window was up, I am not sure what caught because it shut just fine and I have a tennis ball maker for parking.

I have been parking this way for 3 months and its just a bummer.

I do have insurance and yes with comp. I also was thinking my renters insurance might cover this without deductible which would be nice.

I will be at my in-laws for the holidays soooo ruined weellllll relative I guess HAHA.

Thanks for the positive words gents, Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Shouldn't be too expensive, doubt it would be worth an insurance claim.

The front runs around $250 or so iirc. The rear is smaller so shouldn't cost that much. You could also try to find one at a junk yard.

I had a worse experience, so I feel your pain. I was rigging a hardtop lift and testing it. I got it up and back, and was driving the jeep out the garage so I could adjust the lift and a set of horrible noises later and a crash, my entire hard top slid off the back... I didn't secure it with the bolts and something got hung up. Luckily it just broke the back window. My wife comes running out and the first thing she says is "that's an expensive mistake". At least my kids asked if I was ok...

Long story short...$250 later I got a new rear window installed... Check to see what your glass coverage is. It could be a different piece of your insurance with a different deductible from comp or collision.

Depending on your state- windows are covered. I dropped my hard top and had the same thousands of little black pieces of glass all of my garage. Got the back glass put in for $0 with my insurance and only hit as a windshield claim. Most states handle windshields differently than everything else.

Well.. Let's imagine the window did NOT break. You made it out of the garage. When pulling onto the street, some drunk idiot texting plows into you, flips your jeep and you're both crushed to death.

Just sayin... Be thankful for small problems when they happen because things could be sooo much worse.

So anyways, your comp glass coverage should cover it with no deductible. Keep us updated.

That's a horrible feeling and sound. In 2000 I had just brought home my brand new Ford Excursion Limited. The next morning (Excursion in the driveway) I'm mowing and trimming the lawn. Going to town with the weed wacker trimming the edge of the driveway and all of a sudden I hear a small explosion. The weed wacker picked up a small rock and sent it thru the rear window of the less than 200 mile Excursion. Talk about a sick feeling!! Then the next day Ford tells me the Excursion is so new, there wasn't a replacement glass to be had and took 3 weeks to get one at $1,800 bucks!!!
I feel for you!!!!

Dude.... I did the same thing with a 2 week old Jeep!!! I had 800 miles on the odometer!

Anyhow, I called the dealer, told them I was closing the glass and it shattered.

I took it in for the service manager to inspect. Told him the glass got into a bind or twist when closing. He checked the stuts and found one was slightly bent...~cough~cough~

Anyhow, they figured it put the glass into a twist and shattered it... Covered under warranty !!!

Was a $700 bill w the glass being around $300

FWIW my State Farm covers glass breakage/ windows on all my vehicles (even though 2 are STs) with a $0 deductible. Glad that it wasn't worse...kinda make ya wish ya had dual top option now? Not to be an ass but that would be kinda sweet way to deal with the issue...maybe sell the wife on that idea? Seriously glad no one was hurt...GOOD LUCK!!

This exact same thing almost happened to me.
I was parked at my usual garage parking spot, the rear window open but rear gate closed and the garage door goes down. The garage door opener sensor pulls the door up along with the rear window. I hear a loud bang but the widow did not break and no damage to the rear gate. I was so darn lucky.

Good luck with the replacement.

Thanks for putting that out there...I assumed (yeah I am old enough to know better) that it was company wide.

It depends on state insurance laws. The company doesn't matter (if you have full coverage)

That is correct- varies by state.. A quick call to the insurance will let you know if that is the case in your state or not.

Yea, according to my State Farm agent they dont do a $0 glass replacement in TN. I have zero comp on two of my cars (cant get them anymore, grandfathered in policies) but the Jeep has a 100.00 comp, thats the least they do now.

So in California we don't have glass coverage. It's of course covered under comp. But my deductible is 1k, Los Angeles County has some of the most expensive car insurance on the planet.

I have a friend who is doing it for $410 with oem glass so I guess that's best case scenario.
