I just changed the oil in my 2013 jk, i put 5 quarts of oil in it [I know it is suppose to take 6] however the oil is not even showing up on the dipstick. WHY!!??? I had this problem before and I was traveling, when I checked the oil it did not show on the at all on the dipstick, so I quickly had the oil changed. Is there anybody out there having the same problem??
It is not a problem - dipsticks historically only show one quart, i.e. if your dipstick has oil only on half the measured section your oil is 1/2 a quart low. Why in the world would you only put 5 in if you know it holds 6? I understand not wanting to overfill but at least put 5 & 1/2 in.
I agree, I change the oil and the filter and put in 6 quarts. Even if it was a 1/2 quart over [which it never is] it won't hurt a thing. The last thing I would do is be intentionally low a quart for fear of overfilling the engine.
Did you go to a mechanic as offered for some explanation on how to determine your situation better?
Really, if you're changing the oil and are not putting but 5 qts, of oil in the engine you do see the problem, right?
Some of the oil makers now put five qts in a single plastic bottle. Are you confused in thinking it only holds four? Either way check your owners manual and ensure for yourself that you need six qts.
BTW, after changing the oil (vehicle on level ground); why not just add to it until it shows up on the dip stick? There should be no reason to change it.
unless you know there is some problem with your dipstick then add the required amount and measure with the stick. Its ok to be a little over full. So if you accidently overfill and it shows 1/16-1/8" overfilled you are fine.
You said the last time you put in 6 and it went above the full mark. Did you start the engine and let it run for 30 seconds or so, turn it off and wait 5-10 minutes for the oil to settle back down and THEN check the level? You will not get an accurate reading by just pouring in oil and checking it, without circulating the oil throughout the system first.
Old School is filling what is called for or pretty close to it, run engine and let sit, recheck and repeat as necessary.
