On-off road tires

Hi,
I'm a newbe and if this has been covered in another thread pls let me know.
I've just put 20K miles on my 2012 Wrangler Sport and need new tires. The o e wore out fast.
I go off road a lot in sand and lava rock to beaches on the Big Island but the Jeep is also my daily drive.
Can anyone recommend a good replacement tire, maybe a little more aggressive, quiet on road and good for trails. P255 75 R17.

If you want something more aggressive that will work great on the street, I would look into a set of KO2's or duratracs. If you want to go more aggressive, I would go with a trail grappler.

Thanks, I was looking at the KO2 and the Firestone Destination A/T P255/75R17 113S.

KO2 has been my favorite tire so far. I ran BFG M/TS and Geolander M/TS, the KO2s do great in the rain, on rocks and sand, and have never let me down in mud either. Now I've haven't yet buried the tires to the fenders in mid but about a quarter ways up the tire and they got me through. They way quieter on the road than either M/T I ran.

They should. I have a set on my 7.3 in stock size, should be able to get a set for your jeep in many sizes.

I'm running 35x12.5-17 I ran the BFG M/TS that size on my stock wheels. You should be fine.

I highly recommend a Nitto Terra Grappler in 265/70R17 as all-around tires.

I had a set on my 2014 2dr and they were awesome tires - lightweight, quite on the road, very good offroad, great looking and inexpensive.

265/70R17 is the same diameter as stock 255/75R17, just a tiny bit wider.



Got almost 55k miles from them (still have about 4-5/32 tread left)

If you looking for something with grip I'd stay far away from anything Nitto. A Nitto is a cheaper version of a Toyo tires, it's basically their bargain tire but nowhere near as good. They do OK off road, but in snow, ice and rain they are pretty slick.

Absolutely incorrect. My Trail Grapplers have blown away Toyos on the trail.

My vote is for anything Cooper. Cant beat made in USA. Yes they have a factory in China, and no, I have never seen an STT Pro or ST Maxxx not made in USA.

Also newbie here and have a question about tires. My new Willys Wheeler came with BSW off-road tires. Since it's winter here and ice and snow on the ground, these are awesome. Yet I spoke to a veteran truck driver who suggested I get all around tires instead just for my driving around town, up to mountain, etc. since I'm only going to be doing light off-road. Wanting a quieter ride. Dealer wouldn't budge on tire exchange. Should I drive these till they wear out and then go for a new tire? Or rotate them on / off during winter months? This is my primary vehicle.

Nitto? Bargain tire? I think you may be misinformed.

When one company owns another that makes a similar product, it doesnt mean that one product is the cheap version. If anything, nitto is the high end brand.

Just look at King of the Hammers. The large majority are running trail grapplers.

Welcome!
You could SIPE your tires, that would help a little bit in winter but will also help in the rain during summer. Since you haven't gone into details about your Jeep, I'm going to assume you're running stock tires. Personally, I'd buy a TRUE Winter tire, Hankook I-Pike, General Altimax Arctic, Firestone Winterforce, Cooper Discover M&S...these are just a few I've run when I lived in Wisconsin and now Colorado and they all work great in snow and ice. They will absolutely smoke any All Season or All Terrain with the cute snow flake. They will have to be removed in Spring.

Thanks, Sinister6! Yes, they are stock tires. I can see I wasn't clear enough. Sorry. I just want an all season tire, actually, because our roads around here are well maintained in the winter months. I do a couple of road trips per month over 2 mountain passes that sometimes require chains but with 4x4 I don't see a problem in that area. Or around town before the plows have cleaned up the roads. Do you think anyone would be interested in buying the BSW off-roads? I've put 800 miles on them. They are squirrely on the road.

What PSI are you running them at? Too low and they will wander, too high they will knock fillings loose. Regarding selling them, you have to find someone else interested in them. Like I said, siping them will help, they typically do just the center row of lugs. Depending where you are located you may find used snow tires very cheap on CL, Offer Up or even at your local used tire dealer. Then you can decide what YOU want to run for a summer tire, rather than what everyone else is running. Any good AT will perform well, but keep in mind, they typically have marginal performance going off road. Look at the Michelin Defender LTX M/S, many companies put this on their trucks because of its traction and durability. Cooper Discover AT/3 is another outstanding tire, I run the Cooper AT/W on my tow rig. It's a 50K tire that is an AT but rated for full winter use, and does not have to be removed for summer! The Cooper AT/W has been very impressive, 2 buddies actually put them on their trucks too.

As others stated your wrong, check your facts

Years ago yes, they were a cheap entry level brand however Toyo, Yokohama, Hancook and a few others also were also entry level brands. Michelin, pirelli, Goodyear and a few others were top tier

Presently Nitto isn't a entry level tire, their SUV/truck tires actually cost more vs other well known brands and have done a out of R&D designing their tires.

I have visited a few local shops, both independent and chain stores and every time they have pushed Nitto as their top tier brand for my Jeep and if I want to save money go with ..... brands


In regards to snow and ice a tire not designed for those condition no matter what the brand is, will perform poor. The Exo grappler is the only Nitto SUV tire that's rated for snow and received their peak rating. The other tres as you mentioned will not perform well in those conditions due to a combination of a lack of sipes and also compound/tread design.

Do they even get snow on the big island...

Nitto Ridge Grappler might be the MOST premium All Terrain tire on the market today... Certainly not a "cheap version" of anything.

Can't wait to get my set of Ridge Grapplers installed..... I ran a set of Terra Grapplers for the past 2.5 years and they are still wearing fine with about 45% tread left on them. They are 295/70/17's and I decided to go up a size to the 305/70/17 on the Ridge Grapplers, a little wider and a little taller. I get them installed next Monday and picked them up at Discount tire locally on a price match for $255.00 per tire.

My Terra Grapplers do fine on the road and if it's dry on the trail but suck in the mud/ "not a mud tire".... I live in Missouri and almost every trail has mud of some form so I decided to go with a little more aggressive tire but still wanted to keep my good mileage as well. Looks like the Ridge Grappler is the newest and best option for that.

Rotate your tires more often.... they should last longer rotating every 5k or so. Might also look into moving up a couple tire sizes and change wheels to get a better back spacing. You can go up to a 285/70/17 without a lift and be fine just make sure your bump stops get adjusted if need be.
I ran a set of 295/70/17's on aftermarket wheels with proper backspacing and no lift. It only rubbed in the rear wheel well on trail with the back weighted, decided to do a 2.5" lift and no more rub.

My Nitto Terra Grapplers do great in the snow/rain etc but suck in mud.... just not a mud tire. They aren't so great on Ice either but I haven't had a single tire that's good on ice. I still managed to get around at 4am when we had a ice storm with none of the roads treated yet. Just had to take it slow.

Nitto makes the Ridge Grappler in a 265/70/17. Should be about the same height but a little wider.

I installed a set of BF Goodrich KO2 tires this summer then took the Jeep on a road trip from Louisiana to Colorado for some off-roading fun. These tires were very quiet in the highway during my 20 hour drive. Once I was on the trails, the tires performed great. I drove through very rocky trails, streams, and some occasional mud and the tires pulled me though with no problems at all.

My BFG K02s have done great in every situation I have put them in. They grip rocks like a boss, they do awesome in the rain, never let me down in mud, and we had some ice here about 3 weeks ago and my Jeep never missed a lick, my son slid off the road on a bridge and totalled his mustang, when I drove the Jeep across that same bridge I couldn't even tell there was ice on it. 3 other vehicles wrecked in that same spot.

Yeah hopefully they do. Mine did awesome. Here's some pictures of my son's mustang. He was on his way home from work at 1:30 AM. The cop at the scene was right behind him and said he almost lost it as well. When I got there and drove across, I was trying to figure out where the ice was at, never felt it or slid any









That area over I85 is having a bunch of work done and the lighting is pretty poor. I thought it was pretty cool that the cop backed up and told me to pull my rig up there and turn my lights on to light it up so we could avoid anymore accidents. That's me in the background of the first picture.

Nothing like getting that call from a officer to come to the scene of a accident your kid was involved in. Our son was a passenger in a accident involving a Semi on I70. The officer calls us and told us we need to get to the scene immediately. I asked him if my son was ok and all he would say is you need to hurry, your son is in the ambulance and they are working on him now.
When I got there he was ok for the most part but you always end up thinking it's worse when a Semi is involved. Glad your kid was ok and it was just material that was broken. That stuff can always be replaced.

Material things can be replaced for sure, yeah only thing hurt about him was his ego. This is the second time he's totalled a vehicle on ice. The first one was inexperienced driving. I'll give him this one, I saw three other wrecks while we waited on the tow truck.
