2015 JKU Sahara... and I just stuck my head under in prep for my first oil change, and noticed this thing:
...what is this tube? It's open and free-hanging at the bottom. So I was thinking a drainage tube or something, until I poked my finger around the top of the tube (not visible in the pic, as it's covered by more of the engine stuff)... and it's also unattached at the top! There's no connection to the top/bottom of the tube to anything else.
To add to my confusion, there's no similar tube hanging on the other side - this is only on the driver's side.
Looks like the breather tube to the axle, if you look closely at your second picture, I think the fitting it goes on is pictured just left of the shock and just right of the second coil up from the bottom.
Excellent, thanks everyone. That was it, I see where it came unplugged and I plugged it back in. However, the fitting is fairly loose. I could see how it easily slipped off, because it did not take hardly any force to put it back on. Is there a way to keep it on better?

if it was me I'd ask: Did any fluid leak out while the hose wasn't attached? does the hose flow upward to contain anything that may exit the axle and allow it to flow back in? I'd probably ask the shop to check the differential fluid level.
I am obviously not a mechanic, just thinking out loud.

It's just a vent tube extended up to reduce water from getting in during water crossings. It has a little vent pressure relief cap in the top end. It's not an overflow reservoir.
If you lost fluid from it, you likely were overfilled.
Plug it back on, put a zip tie on it and carry on.
