Pitman arm movement on sector shaft?

In my elimination of causes for the vibrations in my front end I used Planman's videos. While checking each aspect I was able to move the pitman arm up and down on the sector shaft about 1/8 - 1/4". Should there be any movement?

I have not had any steering issues and have via the process of elimination found my vibration cause to be the pressure plate / torque converter of my automatic transmission.

Curious, does a steering box usually go in the first 50,000 miles?
That depends. Increasing tire size and changes in wheel offset can increase the stresses on all of your steering components.

My YJ has 192k on the original. It had stock wheels and tires until last year and now they're still close at only 31x10.50.

I started a second post titled Chrysler Star case as the dealer, where I purchased the Jeep, first told me there was no movement felt in Pitman arm, until I reminded them with a second copy of the video, then they said that the movement was "normal play".
They took out the Star case with Chrysler over the vibration due to there being no code to tell them what to do. I've been without the Jeep now for 4 days. Ironic part is I received flyer from them on last Wednesday inquiring if I wanted to sell them the Jeep as they need 2011s badly.

Has anybody else experience the "normal play" in the video??

Has anybody else been involved in a 'Star case' with Chrysler.

Thanks - Paul

I know this an old thread, but I learned about this yesterday 10 miles deep on a trail of sugar sand, and oh yeah, 1 stump lol. That was a long backwards ride out of there

The picture doesn't show it well, but there was rust about an 1/8" deep most of the way around the shaft where it snapped off. It had obviously been fractured for awhile.

We recovered 2 vehicles last summer with broken sector shafts. We were able to take a vehicle down Webster Pass to Denver get a box, drive back up Webster Pass, swap it out and continue wheeling. Took 5 hours to get down to Denver and back up, then 35 min to change the box.
Those two cases convinced me to do the Redneck Ram. Take the worry of the stock box.
