Power Steering Gear and Linkage....

I have a 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited....it has 72000 miles....in the past week since I have been using my 4 whee drive (do to NY Weather)...I have noticed a "popping" sound....when I make a right hand turn the sound is coming from the left front end..and when I make a left hand turn..the sound is coming form the right front end. I took it to the dealer today...and they told me it was the Power Steering Rack...and it would need replaced. After looking into it....my model doesn't have the power steering rack.....it has the power steering gear's and linkage....they want 1298 for part and labor.....

Any suggestions on this..anone else w/ a JK have issues w/ this? Any input would be greatly appreciated...Thank you....

Does it make these noises when in 2 wheel drive ? If not , your conditions does not warrant being in 4 wheel drive. What you are experiencing is your axles binding due to the roads not letting your wheels slip and spin . you need slippery conditions, such as ice, snow, mud . You can cause - do mucho damage to differential gears. It could be something else but I would put it in 2 wheel hi and see if you experience the same noises.

Just out of curiosity, have you checked to see if your swaybar links are tight on the bottom and top??

This happens while I am in 2 wheel drive..not 4 wheel drive..but the noise has started since I have been using 4 wheel drive in the past week or so....but only happens in 2 wheel drive. Sorry for confusion.

My husband usually takes care of these things..and he had tightened up the sway bar back in march last year.....I'll have the sway bars looked at again....

Thank you all for the input....greatly appreciated
