I'm new here, and tonight, without getting into too many details, a friend of mine rolled her 2008 4-door, 4 wheel drive JK onto its passenger side. No one was hurt, and I have a question -- it wont move when put into drive (regardless of transfer case position).
Here is the pertinent information:
It stayed there for about an hour and thirty minutes before we could get enough cars to pull it back onto its wheels, and once it was on its wheels, there was some oil in the airbox (which I think is expected). Also I noticed there was differential fluid spilled onto the rear passenger side tire. Various lights were illuminated in the dash... traction control, ESC BAC (I dunno what that is) and maybe a few others (can't remember, and I don't have the keys to go see).
Like I said the jeep won't move when put into drive, it revs up just fine like nothing has happened. There are no strange grinding noises from the transmission, but I do remember a thud when we put it into 4 high.. but it wasn't fierce enough to make me think twice about it. Do any of you know what's going on? I worked in a Ford service department for 9 years so I'm mostly mechanically inclined, but Jeeps are foreign to me.
I checked the trans fluid level this morning without cranking it -- there wasn't any on the stick (no crank because no oil, we hadn't thought of that last night before we started it).
I didn't have too much time this morning, but I also got under it just now to see if the linkage is ok. There didn't seem to be any damage. Maybe it got jostled loose when we righted it? Which side of the transmission is the linkage? I checked both sides but didn't see any obvious problems.
If the torque convertor lost fluid/front pump lost prime, it could possibly take a while of running the engine to replenish the fluid for normal operation to be restored.
I have not yet taken a Jeep auto trans apart, but I can tell you that some transmissions need to be run in neutral (not Park) to restore fluid to the front pump assembly.
On some Chevy tranny's there was a know issue of a faulty front pump check valve that would not retain fluid in the pump (allowing the torque convertor to drain back also) with vehicle parked on an incline. It could take up to an hour of idling in neutral to restore trans operation enough to get the vehicle moving again.
"Without going into details" is usually code word for drinking and raising hell when things turn expensive. While drinking and driving on the street is never a good idea, I don' t have a problem with someone cutting loose in their rig off road. It's just going to get expensive for them if things go bad.
Not to say that's what happened here or anything Glad you guys got it worked out.
