So I was changing my diff oil on my front axle and got all the bolts loose except for one which stripped and I've tried every "rounded" bolt grip from homedepot and lowes and I can't get it off. Any ideas or suggestions to get it off?
Use a Dremel tool and a super thin cutting wheel and cut a screw-driver slot in it. Use that plus Vise Grips. The other general rule of thumb--use a torch and heat it up.
Worse case you can take a drill and use it to remove the bolt head. Once the diff cover is off you'll be able to get plenty of purchase on the remaining bolt shank
I tried a smaller socket and even it slipped off, but I'm going to try the screw driver and vice grips. I have a MIG welder, but it's my brothers (who is deployed) and I don't know how to weld...
I rounded a brake caliper bracket bolt once that was put on by the stongest impact wrench ever at the factory. I used one of these and a BFH and a 24" breaker bar. Pound the socket onto the rounded bolt with the BFH and use the breaker bar to loosen it. You can get this at Autozone. (BFH=Big Freakin Hammer)
Have you tried a 6 point socket or wrench on it yet?
I've also used a hammer and chisel on the edge of the head to spin rounded bolts out with some success.
Rammer 500 knows what he's doin !! I have used this method for over 30 years in Industry, it's never failed me...The punch or chisel idea also works on broken bolts or studs.
Wear your safety glasses !!!
