I've noticed a shimmy, shake or such after hitting some bumps in my '08. Some say steering dampner. I just got it used 66k a couple weeks ago. Should I be concerned?
No modifications. Stock, and tires are 17. Thanks for the reply damndirtydog
kind of a multiple bounce, like she bounces a bit on the front end and calms down. Shimmy may have been a wrong description. Kind of a diminishing bouncing on the front end, and you can feel it in the wheel. No loss of control, and not on every bump. Seems like she bumbles a bit over some bumps and vibrates. Not being a mechanic, I don't know if that describes it best.
Anyway, I love my jeep and plan to keep it for a long time (even though I've had it for three weeks!)
Can be a bunch of things. Shocks ? Ball joints, Tre's.
Get under there and have somebody turn the wheel 10-2 quickly. Feel and look for movement in the tie rod ends. Then check ball joints which don't last long on JK's.
^^this and also have somebody hop up and down on the bumper. Also from underneath push up and down (like you're bench pressing) and try to simulate going over bumps while you are under the front end looking and listening.
That's how I found a loud knocking noise was coming from my lower rear shock mounts, and that the threaded bolts had worn the inside of the crush sleeves.
Good luck.
^^ yep. If you're not mechanically interested, better get it to a front-end shop. Just a thought if you have multiple problems; you can buy Synergy heavy-duty parts and put them on yourself and actually save $. Probably want a mechanic to do the ball joints and alignment.
It could be anything really, I would replace the shocks anyway lol they're prolly still the stock shocks and after 66k they're probably due for replacement. Mine sort of does the same thing, But I plan on replacing the shocks and ball joints and all that anyway with some heavy duty parts.
Thanks, I'll try jumping up and down, and try the 10-2, see if I see anything. that was another question about how soon I should consider changing the shocks. So, I'll plan on the ball joints and shocks, see what "shakes" out
Thanks a lot! Appreciate the help!
John
