I installed an antenna x 13" antenna and honestly my reception is fine. That said, I am not so far from the stations I listen to and that is likely a factor.
It all depends on how far the station signals are coming from, geography, etc.. I find the closer you live to a major city OR the closer to the station, the better the signal. With stock, I could get NYC stations (talk radio) that I sometimes have trouble with from my AntennaX 13" (a couple of hours NW of the city). Also, the crappier the weather, the harder it is for me to pick them up. I will happily give up a small amount of reception though for the better looking antenna.
I live out in the sticks, and put a ton of miles on.
I'll make sure I have it screwed all the way down and check again. When i used the seek button it didn't catch much.
I'm glad it was only $16.
I did the 13" antenna X and didnt really like the way it would deform when driving and the loss of signal but didnt want to put that stock monstrosity back on the Jeep. I ended up going with the 14" black billet Antenna X. Much better look imo and better reception than the 13".
I have noticed slight reduction in reception with the short antenna. I am not bothered by it having the curve to it.
Does plasti dipping stop that awful twang sound when the antenna is hit? That was why I changed mine.
I use this one from Amazon, I think I paid $18 bucks for it, make sure you gat the optional adaptor for the JK
It works pretty well, I loose signal once I pull all the way into my garage.

I will say that I tried plasti-dipping then line-x on my stock antenna and neither one worked. Our trails are really poorly maintained and there is a lot of brush that will catch the antenna. The plasti-dip came off really quick. I tried the spray on truck bed liner. It came off almost as fast and left black marks all over my windshield frame from knocking against it. I went with a 13" stubby and the reception isn't great but it doesn't leave black marks on my Jeep at least.
I just popped the little ball off the stock antenna, cut the antenna down to 14", ground the tip and glued the little ball back on, rustoleum painted it, and put it back on. Is the reception worse than stock, of course, pretty much all shorter antennas will have worse reception. Did it cost me any money, pennies.
Probably a stupid question but: is the Satellite receiver built into the normal antenna? Does the stubby antenna affect satellite reception? That's all I listen to..
Ok thanks guys. That was the only thing holding be back from getting a short antenna.
