HI all I'm looking to get a snorkel but I've been reading there are some install issues with aftermarket fender flares. I have the bushwhacker pocket fender flares. Has anyone installed a snorkel and also has those fender flares . I have a 2015 jku .
The AEV style snorkel pretty close to lays on the fender.. It does work with the Bushwacker Flat Flares but I believe the pocket flares sit a bit higher..
it looks good but i am concerned that it might be too low. occasionally the water rushed the hood and it looks like itwould get scooped right in to the snorkel. is there an extension that can be added on to make it higher?
look into rugged ridge snorkel, the river raider I don't believe has an extension but the rugged ridge does, so you can swap between a high and low mount depending on the wheeling you do.
EDIT: actually river raider does have an extension
Darren, I was looking at it on my phone so it's hard to see but it looks like the River Raider system might only require cutting the cowel. That would be better than cutting the hood and fender which I don't want to do.
Rugged Ridge is an option but Donovan has one and he said it was a PITA to install.
I heard the same thing about the rugged ridge, also hear it has som weak spots, I plan on using some of the rugged ridge parts but will piece a lot of it together myself under the hood. I don't have the rr kit yet but I believe it squeezes up between the fender to come out where the cowl goes, river raider looks to just go straight through the wall to get to the same spot, so I will be taking the river raider approach but esthetically it will all look rugged ridge.
@jwalters2522 , I am thinking of doing a DIY snorkel by piecing together parts. I figure between what already exists and what I can buy at HD/Lowes, I can do it for less money and not have to cut my hood/fender. There are a lot of write ups available on several different forums to give me ideas on how to do it. I like these kind of challenges. If you've got ideas please share them. We will see if I can actually pull it off. I'm in the beginning stages of planning. Time will tell if its possible or if I will just plunk down the money on either RR snorkel.
I have seen it done with Apollo filters (k&N) with the RR setup, but I went with a spectre in line canister, they are 85 bucks from pep boys with the filter. Spectre is K&N so Im not to thrilled with the filter but they sell DIY kits, mostly for fart cans but it can be used for our app also. I really want to go straight through the wall without going in front or over the engine if that makes sense. Im still in the trial and error stage also but I don't want to reuse stock parts. they make universal joints to incorporate the MAF sensor also. So I figure buy the rugged ridge low mount (and high if needed) and between hardline from spectre and the flex line river raider sells it should be pretty straight forward. the fun part will be finding new mounting points if I route the intake different. I'll be doing a lot of this, this weekend so i'll tag you in it. Also I see your in florida? beach sand lol just got back from destin a few days ago, look into Weapon-R they make an inline foam filter that should work with spectre's 4'' inline, I may go that route also, but a lot of these guys are geared toward performance so these filters may be horrible in our setups.
I have the RR with high, low and dust precleaner mounts and love it. If you take your time it is not an extremely technical install but it does require time. Some may not like the connections that are lower than the stock airbox. If you use silicone as required and clamp it as required I am confident that I have a good seal. I personally dont plan on fording 4 feet of water but I do plan on not being the first Jeep on a dusty trail and the dust precleaner is the ticket.
The RR kit is very versatile and once installed it takes 5 minutes max to change out from high to low. It also looks badass which is a visual bonus. On top of that you dont have to carve into your hood which costs in excess of a grand to mount the unit. Yes you have to cut the fender but there is provisions to put the Jeep back to stock if you want. The cutting allows the cowl piece to be removed. A kit is included to replace the cowl if you want to remove the snorkel completely.
Look for a long install time but great results when done right. I am very pleased with mine.

Good post and info, Captain Ed. Thanks for replying. The RR is my first choice but I don't want to cut into anything. I'm surprised all snorkels require cutting the body in some way. Here has to be a better way. I'd rather remove pieces that could be put back later on if I want to go back to stock.
Installed the AEV snorkel last week. No body cutting, just the hood if you don't have one of the pre cut hoods. Easy install. Looks good. No extra road noise.
Yea I really like the AEV also, does it tie into the stock airbox? I don't have a problem cutting my hood but my issue is I need the stock air box gone for the extra room. need to clean up some wiring and such.
@drdarren @NLBeren looking at the RR kit with the circle connection being as low as it is I wont be able to mod it for my setup without having a plastic welder and that's way to much modding for just a snorkel. But I still think I can go the River raider (just realized rugged ridge and river raider have the same short RR title) approach and pull the cowl instead of cutting it and use a modded sheet to keep the option for going back stock. Downside with river raider is its not easy on the eyes with the extension.
Doc how much room do you need to make up to get the AEV style on?
@captain ed the only reason I didn't go with RR was that word silicone, ive seen guys use the apollo filter to get away from some of that and it cleans it up. If there was a way I could keep the intake line up top and go straight back into the cowl to have the rugged ridge connect, I would buy it right now. very clean setup and thanks for the input
EDIT: sorry the tagging didn't work captain
