Third brake light

So today I removed the spare before I detailed the Jeep. I also decided to snip the wire that goes to the third brake light, and I tucked the rubber grommet back in.
I spliced the wires back together, and the light still worked. I brought the assembly in the house with the wire attached, and that was it.
End of day, I decided to leave the wire plugged into the Jeep, so it doesn't get lost.
Again I splice the wires, and now it no longer works. I noticed there is no way to check to see if the bulb is blown on the brake light, why?
All the other lights in the Jeep work, so I am stumped, and I didn't see if there was a separate fuse. Does someone know what it could be, or what my options are? Thanks much

The mount for mine finally got snapped off. I capped the wires, stuck 'em back behind the grommet, siliconed everything up and dropped the light/snapped off mount in the trash. Recommend same.

I don't know if the bulb was working or not.

The third brake light isn't serviceable. However, since you cut the wire and removed it, if you touch the hot wire to a 12V source and then ground it you'll know if the light itself is functioning.

It was something simple. The fuse tripped, I am guessing the wire touched metal when I connected it causing it to trip. I am glad that's all it was. Thanks

Damn fuses! I'm glad you solved it.

Driving around on the highway I always wonder if I will get pulled over for not having the rear brake light. NOT! I don't give a damn, I'm glad that signpost broke off. Now I can stick something else on top of my spare.
