Hopefully this is the right place to post this. I have a manual 2008 Jeep Wrangler Sahara with around 75,000 kms on it. I haven't had any issues with it for a while, but today I was making a turn up a hill and it seems as if the transmission slipped. It revved up all the way and was screeching. I turned the vehicle off, started it again and the same thing. When I turned the vehicle off again, it wouldn't start and the steering locked up. However, we gave it a few minutes and tried to push it into the parking lot. When we started it again, it was working perfectly fine. Any ideas what this could be?
I do apologize, I don't know much about vehicles...
While I am by no means an expert, one thing about manual transmissions is that when they are in gear they do not slip. If it were the transmission or the transfer case, you would not feel slippage and screeching, you would hear grinding and clunking. Both devices are made of gears on shafts.
The clutch is another matter. It may be going and it may be the throw out bearing not allowing the surface of the clutch to make full contact with the flywheel and then under load you get the slippage and screeching. Rather like the old fan belts used to do if they were not properly tightened and you turned on the air conditioner.
You don't say where you are in your profile, but if you have some friends who know mechanics who are reliable and do a good job, have them do it. That's what I did when mine started acting up (not in the same way). If you don't have any community connections to give you guidance, call around to some of the bigger shops and see what they will charge. You do want to make sure they use a kit with a metal throw out bearing, not the plastic one that comes in some of the lower priced kits.
You are probably looking in the range of $800-$900 for the job. The labor cost is going to be the biggest charge as they have to disconnect both drive shafts and remove the transfer case and transmission to get to the clutch.
That just seems so odd to me that the clutch would go. I am fairly certain we replaced it about 2 years ago when I had some other maintenance work done on it. I will have to double check that. But with 75,000 kms, I feel like you should not have to replace the clutch twice? I am definitely easy on it - I don't ride it or anything.
I also couldn't really describe what happened as grinding or clunking. It was a high pitched squeal, no shaking of the car. Everything was perfectly fine, but when I turned the corner it was as if the car had popped into neutral, even though my shifter was still in second gear. When I tried to change gears that's when I heard the loud squeal and it went to max RPM's. There was a burning smell as well, but it didn't smell like burnt clutch...
I will see if I can get a friend to come and take a look at it. Maybe take it for another drive around the block to see if there are any issues.
I agree that replacing twice in 75K miles is unusual. But, it is the only part in the drive train that is not a hard connection. In an automatic transmission, the bands can get worn and slip and act in a similar manner.
