USA gears and noise?

I just got my gears from Randy’s R&P. I thought I was getting Yukon gears and got USA gears. I've been told that Yukon won't be offering 4.56 gears until June 2010. I've read USA gears are noisy, and since I take to the highway everyday, I'm wondering if I should wait for the Yukons. Does anyone have any experience with the USA gears?

I have Yukon 4.56 gears and they're just rebranded Superior junk from China. They were run-in poorly and are noisey.
Perhaps they plan to make their own now or get them from another source? I've had them on for over 30,000 miles and they haven't gotten louder...

Ring and pinion sets are not easy to make..The biggest issue is deformation because of Heat Treatment. A good matching process (matching the pinion with the ring gear as a set) for a smooth bearing pattern is also important..
If this is NOT obtained, you will never get a good running set after being build in.
There are a lot of "added" costs in the manufacturing process to produce a good Quality set and rest assured this is where the corners are cut.. Who controls these processes once they are "Made in China"..Visits to review these operations in an ongoing fashion are very expensive. Lots of "show and tells" are happening for visitors and all looks well..
HOWEVER, once you are gone, who cares... The latter is a "generic" issue with all that "Made in China" junk.

Randy's told me the USA were made by Superior too! I was hoping Yukon was a step up, they claim to use a better steel then the USA gears do. I was told Yukon doesn't have the 4.56 for the D30HD? What front axel do you have?

Talk to me about "run-in" is that where the P and R teeth meet, best case being a 50/50?

US Antigoon,
You sound like that’s experience talking, and not good experience.

So, understanding set-up is a key component to quiet gears, and quality control is NOT happening. What is the answer, which gears offer the best chance of obtaining a quiet ride?

It all starts with a good matched set.. Then the build in (stuffing) is very critical to assure correct side ways shimming of the ring gear carrier and correct fore and aft shimming of the pinion.. Measurements have to be made correctly to select the right shims.. After this is all done a slight loaded rotational test with special marking paint will tell you the pattern..The correct pattern with the right surface finish and hardening will assure you the smooth run.

example

I have no knowledge of the Dana axle aftermarket gears..I do know that (based on my previous life experience) Dana made some darn good ring gear sets..Are they available in the aftermarket..???.

Made in the USA gears might give you a better link towards the Manufacturer for detailed questions ..(If I ever re-gear, I will only buy a Made in the USA gear set)

The steel used for these kind of gears is pretty common throughout the industry .. The big difference is the way the "green" manufacturing is done.. (very sharp tooling and correct feeds and speeds to minimize surface deformation) Next critical step is HT and Quench, stress relieving and preferably shot peening. The has to be done correct to avoid any deformations. etc...It is the latter where most corners are cut..

I have a normal '08 Sahara with a D30; it had 3.73 stock gears though. I've heard that the pumpkin is different if you had 3.21 stock.

I'm an electronics expert; this is Antigoon's field...

S Antigoon, I’m told that Dana gears don’t go higher then the 4.10 they put in the Rubicons. I would spend the double money to get 4.56 gears if I could. I’m wondering how much gear noise I will really hear with the tires? Too bad there isn’t someone out there who has gone to a USA Standard gear.

Randy’s is going to charge me 15% plus shipping to send the USA gears back, that’s about $100.00 Says when the Yukon gears come in July, and they told me they are Yukon) Compensation: they won’t charge me shipping when I get the Yukons, which is $40. More “Lessons learned.”

from what I read yesterday, Yukons are American made now. I'll wait for their 4.56 gears to come out in July. Guess I need to change my signature for now. End.

I am doing a search on that as well.. I assume US Gear is USA.. Yukon is NOT specific and their verbage is something like the "best manufacturing all over the world..." this is "code" for China..or other sources..Precision Gear has different sources and I believe the Dana 44 gears are sourced in South Korea. I think you need to call them one by one..
As far as the quality is concerned... ask in the related 4x4 forums what their experiences are...once you select a "brand"

As mentioned before, the build or stuffing is very important..So find the best local shop around and ask them to explain how they go about it, how they measure the critical dimension to assure correct setting of pinion and ring gear. Once a correct pinion/ring gear assembly is done it should be confirmed by a nice paint pattern test. Once this shows results as shown below, one might expect a smooth mesh..
In a nutshell, prepare yourself with some "pointed" question to evaluate their capabilities..

Here some pattern info..with related root cause for deviation (Courtesy Precision Gear)

There were no American made gears for the JK when I bought mine. I was told that US Gear was going to have some but I never heard for sure.
