so my 3.8 just was at the dealer for warranty work and had spun a rod bearing. Its a 2011 and I am only at 52k miles on the jeep. I know 5w-20 is lightweight and is not what the 3.8 was built for and seems to burn quicker. I see a lot of people running 5w-20 and 5w-30 but I want a heavier oil. I was thinking of going full synthetic 10w-30 but wanted to make sure it wouldn't be an issue.
2015 jku. Been using 5-20w valvoline synthetic but am thing of switching to 5-30w valvoline synthetic based off what I've read....is that okay considering I've changed oil 4 times prior with 5-20w viscosity?
You have the 3.6 and your using a full synthetic. That would be good for the cold weather climates. In summer or warmer climates (don't know where your from) go with the 5w30 full synthetic for better protection. The thinner 5w20 is good for the cold weather starts.
BTW you can switch oils anytime it wont harm anything. The only time it is recommended not to mix is when you mix oils in the same motor in other words, you have one oil in your motor and you add some to top it off and its a different type.
5/20 Synthetic so far but for the coming warmer weather I will go to 5/30 synthetic. I have been using WIX filters but I am going to go with MOPAR from now on. Just to avoid any issues if there is an engine problem.
Just an FYI, and nothing more. Mobil 1 is a great oil, but doesn't meet the MS6395 Chrysler spec. Mobil Super does. Either way I doubt you'll have an oil related problem but.........
I used valvoline premium conventional, and i just recently switched to valvoline max life high mileage. Jeeps only got 40K on it but the high mileage stuff is syn blend (best of both worlds) and has a much stronger additive package (which is really what seperates one oil from another) always the 5W-20 flavor. Filter wise, its a cartridge. Whatever is on sale. Its got a purolator in it right now. Only thing i wont run is Fram. Bleh.
I used to know a guy who works at Southwest Research in San Antonio. His job was tearing down engines for oil wear research after many miles driven on a test track. He claimed Valvoline caused less engine wear among the diffrent brands they tested. Just throwing that out there. I don't use Valvoline myself.
I just put some crisco that seems to work for the last 10 years. :bop:
