I have a 2015 JKU Sport and I believe I've finally settled on getting 35x12.50R15 BFG KM2s and Level 8 Trackers -- I heard these were a good combo, however, I've read there may be issues with caliper grinding.
So, my question is:
Specifically for the Level 8 Trackers at 15x8, it seems there are two offset choices for black wheels. Which would be better to make sure there are no caliper issues if I'm running a 12.5 wheel?
Those tires are discontinued as far as I could tell a couple months ago when I was shopping. In that size, that is. Will let JK folks answer your wheel question.
I have the -30s and there are no issues except you will need spacers if you ever want to upgrade your tie rod. I don't think the -19s have any issues either but I'm not sure if even spacers will allow a tie rod upgrade.
Alrighty, I went and did some research and it looks like Synergy Tie rods will barely fit the -19 with alloy wheels if I stick with the 15s. Though I have to admit, I'm not sure when/if I'd likely need to upgrade my tie rod... I haven't taken the jeep off-road yet, I'm waiting until I get a 2.5" lift, flat fenders, disconnects, etc. then it's off to the trails.
Maybe 16s will be less of a headache? I just liked the aesthetic of a fat tire on smaller wheels (and I read through quite a few threads on the pros and cons of 15, 16, and 17 wheels...). Seems everyone has a pretty even split opinion for each size and it all boils down to personal preference and mod compatibility down the road. One of the main issues brought up for the 15s was even wear on the tires.
So, I guess I'll go with -30 offset unless I hear any strong arguments for the -19.
And for a bit more context: I am likely going to be a weekend wheeler and a destination off-roader, mainly light to medium trails as this is my DD. I don't plan on excessive crawlin' or muddin'.
Don't go 16s. Very limited choices on tires and Most are E rated.
I went from 15 to 16's running the synergy tie rod. Big mistake!!! Spend a few extra bucks and get 17's.
Like kjeeper said, I think you are a candidate for 17s. For light wheeling 15s are not a good choice. Like using a Corvette to move a mattress; it can be done, but is not ideal.
There are almost no limitations to 17" wheels. Tire choice, wheel choice, are awesome, and brake and suspension upgrades are all available to you. The only issue is cost is higher.
For your use, I would say 17s are optimal, but you can go for 16s to save a few dollars. You will lose some upgrade paths and a little onroad performance. 15s are even cheaper, but I think you sacrifice too much and don't gain enough, especially for a DD. So, it depends on which is more important to you.
Im with Kjeeper 16's are not a good choice just because of the tire options. 15's will limit you on just about every upgradeable tie rod and if you space it to fit the tie rod your looking at ball joints failing on a regular basis. I just did all this research contacting method and synergy trying to figure out my best options. Synergy will not say the tie rod fits on anything lower then a 16, it does clear on some 15's at ride stance but add in any flex and at full lock it will contact the rim. With you going to a 35 you really don't want to put that tire way out there just to run a 15, the money you save will go to other things eventually failing.
I thought 15's would look great and was going that route as well until I saw how limited I was going to be just for a look and semi cheaper tires.
I have the 15x8 Level 8 Trackers. While they are really nice for now without tie rod mods, some very good points are made above. If/when I go from 33's to 35's, there are a host of issues that come up that I'll have to deal with. So for that reason, when I need new tires, I'm either essentially stuck with 33's again, or all new wheels along with bigger tires.
What host of issues? The only issue I've had was not enough clearance for a tie rod. And that was resolved with spacers. And that would have been an issue no matter if I had 33s or 35s. The other limitation is I can upgrade my brakes. But I also don't feel the need to upgrade so it's not much of an issue.
I've decided to go with 35x12.5x17 KM2s and AEV Savegre wheels. A fair bit pricier but I think it'll give me the most options in the future as well as adding value to the jeep overall.
The tide is turning. There are countless threads where the vast majority of posts are in favor of going with smaller rims particularly 15" on JKs because the price of the rim and tire are lower. This is true but it ignores the myriad of issues that can and often do arise from 15" rims. You can always force fit them as many do and ignore the issues.
The bottom line is that 15" rims which were ever so popular on previous generation Jeeps are too small and unnecessary for the larger JK.
