Post '00 TJ grinding when shifting?

I am new to this forum, and I joined because I have a question.
I am looking at buying a 2000 TJ sport. I took it for a test drive yesterday and noticed that while shifting, it will grind in almost every gear unless I shift really slowly and take my time between gears.
Has anyone had a problem like this before? What could possibly cause this?
I don't want to buy it if I have to replace the transmission right away.
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if there is a problem but after driving wranglers for over 10 years I do know you cannot drive it like a sports car. I drive it like a truck and shift slowly. It's not a power daemon anyway and learned to stop rushing my life away.

Retired my 94 YJ 4cyl 5spd @ 200K

^^ what he said. The transmissions aren't your 05 ford mustang type. It's a jeep. When shifting, pause for a second in neutral, then proceed to shift into gear as usual. Sure, not as fun. But you don't get any grinding!
98 TJ sport 4.0L I6 356,000 miles.
No Engine, axle, tranny, or t-case rebuilds.
