04 TJ won't shift into 4high or Neutral

Hey there guys,

I own a 2004 TJ, 6 cylinder manual. With the influx of this snowy, icy weather, the need for the wrangler's wonderful 4wd is paramount. Here's my problem:

When I shift the 4wd shifter from 2hi to 4high, it seems to work fine, even though the "PART TIME" indicator light does *not* light. It still seems to work okay though. When I try to then proceed to shift it into Neutral, or 4low for that matter, the shifter won't move... It's as though it is stuck.

To get into 4hi, we all know you pull the shifter down towards you, then neutral is to the right of that and down, and then 4low is all the way down.

Once I attempt to swing the shifter to the right, it stops, I cannot go down any futher, and it goes back into place at 4high. This is rather annoying and I was wondering what could be causing this problem. Again, I cannot even get the shifter to stick into N or 4lo. BUT, 4hi seems to be working fine. Any thoughts??

Thanks so much guys

When shifting from 4hi to 4lo make sure the transmission is in neutral and you are not moving. If its still sticking allow the jeep to roll a couple of feet, sometimes the drive train gets bound up. Make you shifts firm to the range you want to be (hi or lo) in and don't stop at neutral in the T-case unless you want it there. It will get stuck in neutral some times but again just rock the jeep just a little to get out of it. If all else fails turn off the motor and make your shift.
