1 Loud Bang

I was coming home today and going around a curve at about 45mph I hear a loud bang like someone hit the rear end with a hammer. I slow down but no difference in driving or handling. Pull over look underneath not a sign of anything. I go and drive the same road 2 more times for like 20 minutes trying to get it to reproduce the sound or act up in any way and nothing. I am at a loss, I think could have been a stone or something but it was a hell of a load bang. Any thoughts?

Aside from a big rock hitting your Jeep, the only other thing that comes to mind is that rear lockers like the Detroit Locker can cause a loud bang once in a while when they unload. If you have a rear locker, that could be it. If not and the rear end doesn't start making unusual noises, I wouldn't worry about it.

I agree with the locker thing Jerry.
I also had something like this happen once in an LSD rear end. The ring gear snapped a tooth and it was ok for a while. Then one day I think the tooth churned up in the oil or a final misalignment with the ring gear and pinon, and instead of a loud bang, it felt like I was rear ended and the tires came to a screeching halt. The rear end grenaded.

Thanks. No locker just LSD Think I may drain the rear end this weekend to see what it looks like. It needs it anyway. I have drove it about another 1hour and nothing at all, so now wait for the grenade. LOL

That sounds like a good idea and fresh fluid is always good.

Good time to for order Lube Locker diff gaskets, one fo the best little upgrades you can get, makes changfing rear & front fluid easier & quicker.

actually it is not that much more work you could just pull the rear case off and look that way 2. Just remember to also get some rtv black. Thatway you can see more then just oil.

change your gas cap?

I bought a 79 camaro used that needed a vented gas cap but the PO has put on a non vented one. Turns out it would create a vacuum, then BOOM!
