1997 TJ Seat Belt Issue

I just put in the Herculiner in my 97 TJ. When I did so, I had to reomve the front seat belt bolts so I could roll in the bed liner. Now, I cannot get either front seat belt to extend so I can remount it. They are both super tight. Any tips or secrets? I tried pulling, putting on brakes, etc. Please help. Thanks!

I am not positive here but back in the day when I used to install police equip I had to remove many a seatbelt ect. If I am not mistaken some seatbelts have a release mechanism in the coil that you can release with a screwdriver. I am not positive on jeeps never messed with the seat belts.

I had the same problem and mine were really picky about at being at just the right angle. If they are tilted from vertical just slightly they will not release. Try bolting in the bottom part first then gently pull straight up. I had to try a few times and they finally released.

The 2 Jeeps I have had, have both gotten teh locked seat belt thing a few times. The old Jeep, I would take the cover off and hit it with some grease, work it a few times and it would come loose. the new one, the dealer fixes it

Don't use grease, that can prevent the mechanism from locking up. Hopefully you meant some kind of a lightweight lubricant.

When you have a choice, buy American.
