My check engine light has been on for a few months now , So guessing its nothing major ,

i have tried the 3 x turn /on and off key idea to get the fault code , But it does not seem to work on this model .

what is the best way of turning the light off / or will i need to take bulb out of the dash

Disconnect the battery for a little bit and it should reboot the computer and clear the code. Probably will come back in a few days though. Just repeat the process.

Although I wouldn't just forget about the CEL. If you can't get the code to show up on your dash cluster, take it to O'Reillys or something so they can run a free diagnostic

If you have a '97 and you don't get at least a '55' display on the dash, you are doing it wrong.

key on off on off on - leave it in the 'on' position until the code or codes display in the odometer.
As asked by WatlooBoy - Are you waiting long enough? - codes don't display immediately.
'
97's have 2-digit codes which appear in the odometer - CEL will also 'flash' the code.
ie - if a code is 35, CEL will flash 3 times, pause, flash five times so if you have multiple codes it will take a while.
'12' is very common - I have code 12 every time I check - it means a loss of battery power - if you have recently disconnected your battery but it also shows if there has recently been a momentary loss of battery power which is very common.
'12' will not cause the CEL to illuminate on your dash.
When all codes are displayed, '55' will display to indicate the check is complete.

If the PCM is from a 98 the odometer code read does not work

The 97 and 98 PCMs are plug and play straight swaps so if someone swapped in a 98 OXM part number is only way to tell

I ran my 98 on a 97 XJ PCM just to see of it would work and it did

Also towards end of year production Chrysler sometimes gets squirly on date parts change with some overlap

You can buy a wireless OBD reader at Amazon for $20. It's plug and play, and you download a OBD II reader app for your phone or iPad. I got one, and can read all codes, look up code info, check temps, pressure, rpm while driving, etc. I can also clear and reset any codes.

One of the best things I bought......

I'm away, so I can't tell you the name of the specific wireless OBDll unit I got, but the app I bought for my iPad and iPhone is "OBD FUSION".

Works great.....I can set up my iPad on the dash, and check speed, Rpm, pressure, temp, etc, while stationary or driving.....

The great part is being to read any codes, and reset if necessary.

I'll be home tomorrow,so if you want the info on the reader, let me know and I'll post it when I get back.
