Disconnect the battery for a little bit and it should reboot the computer and clear the code. Probably will come back in a few days though. Just repeat the process.
Although I wouldn't just forget about the CEL. If you can't get the code to show up on your dash cluster, take it to O'Reillys or something so they can run a free diagnostic
It should work. Are you giving it enough time after the third "on"?
Otherwise, like suggested above, have it read. I wouldn't ignore it. How's your mpg?
No need to buy a OBD II reader if he has an O'Reillys or some sort of autoparts store within 5 miles that can read the code for free at the expense of $2.10 of gas
If you have a '97 and you don't get at least a '55' display on the dash, you are doing it wrong.
key on off on off on - leave it in the 'on' position until the code or codes display in the odometer.
As asked by WatlooBoy - Are you waiting long enough? - codes don't display immediately.
'
97's have 2-digit codes which appear in the odometer - CEL will also 'flash' the code.
ie - if a code is 35, CEL will flash 3 times, pause, flash five times so if you have multiple codes it will take a while.
'12' is very common - I have code 12 every time I check - it means a loss of battery power - if you have recently disconnected your battery but it also shows if there has recently been a momentary loss of battery power which is very common.
'12' will not cause the CEL to illuminate on your dash.
When all codes are displayed, '55' will display to indicate the check is complete.
You can buy a wireless OBD reader at Amazon for $20. It's plug and play, and you download a OBD II reader app for your phone or iPad. I got one, and can read all codes, look up code info, check temps, pressure, rpm while driving, etc. I can also clear and reset any codes.
They have the apps for iPhone/iPad now? I looked into one a while back, but I only saw android. If they do I'm so getting one, those things are convenient. I have a ready lat reader, but you wouldn't want to try to drive and read it.
The OBDII Reader was an ieGeek Wifi Wireless reader. I got it on AMAZON for about $20 delivered. Make sure you get one for iPhone/iPad, or android, depending on your needs
I use the OBD Fusion app for IPhone/iPad and it works great.
