1st Jeep, having tranny problems

97 TJ with 140k miles auto, 4.0 4x4. The problem with the tranny is that I can shift from R-N, N-R, D-N, N-D and R-N-D to D-N-R without pressing the lever. My brother and I were stripping the carpet to give it a good cleaning and I removed the shift console. In it, I found a small 5 inch aluminum metal plate with holes in it that I removed because it was just laying there. I don't know if it was suppose to be there because I even found a pen and a few keys, gum wrapers etc in there. Any help would be appreciated

Need some detail:

Can you describe what "pressing the lever" means exactly?

Are you saying you can shift it now without doing anything but moving the shifter and you can just bump it into another gear?

I don't know much about autos in the jeeps but it sounds like you removed the shifter bracket. I think it WAS snapped in and probably came loose when you pulled the cover off. Try opening the cover again and replacing the bracket.

Yes, I can shift into different drives just by pushing the shifter up or down.

First I would take the T handle off and spray WD40 down into the hole were the push rod is.The button on the side that you normally have to push in to shift ,well that button pushes in on a white plastic wedge piece that in return pushes down the rod and that pushes down the pin that goes into groves on the locking plate(boy that was a mouth full)anyway the push rod inside the shifter handle gets dirt and sticky crap built up in it and does not allow the rod to move up and down so the shifter does not lock in drive and so on.The T handle will have I think two small screws on the back side toward the ashtray that holds it on.Remove those and pull up on the handle while holding the button in cause the button does have a spring behind it and will fly out so be sure to hold the button in while pulling the T-handle off. Then you will see a wedge shaped white plastic piece that needs to be treaded off(count the threads off and put back on the same amount of threads) once off spray WD down the shaft and work the rod up and down. That sounds kinky Anyway that should free it up so it will lock in again.
