2.5 L engine

I am trying to get some info on the 2.5 L engine. How well does it hold up? I know the 4.0 L is good forever, but how about the 2.5 L? I have asked this question before, but no one seems to answer it.

Would someone please give me some insight on this?

The 2.5L is a strong engine and will last as long if not longer then the 4.oL the only issue with the 4.0 is the rear cylinder gets very hot, due to lack of cooling. I have a 2.5L with many hours of off-road abuse and its my DD. with 105K. I just needed to replace my input shaft bearing but my engine is strong. jut keep change'n your oil like you would in any other car

bought my 98 about 1 1/2 yr ago and have no complaints. normally i would never buy anything that's 10 yrs old with almost 120K miles-usually i'm getting rid of vehicles long befor they reach this age/mileage. besides normal maint. bout the only thing i've had to do to it was a cam position sensor and replace rear wheel cyl's. has made it through 2 N. Il winters and always started w/no problems. when i was looking i test drove numerious ones with various mods but found this one(actually wife found it) at a dealer. it was super clean, no rust in the normal jeep places or any where else. it's 100% stock and i've kept it that way and i feel it has no performance issues except maybe a little more stick action(dn shift 4 hills) granted it won't win any races but i've had it up to 70 with pedal left-but as fast as i wanted to take it. it gets from 17-22 mpg depending on my foot/shifting but averages around 20. it's my daily driver(16 mi 1 way) and replaced my pickup that got a little better than 1/2 the mpg(still have-tow duty 4 trailer) i love my lil jeep and have no problems with the 4 banger-actually have 2 of em, wife got a compass w/one-but her's is faster and better mpg
to wrap this up, i've put close to 30K on this jeep and am happy with it. if you plan to lift, big tires etc, you'll probably be happier with a 6 or plan to regear. it is what it is and you need to figure out what you plan to do to your jeep and go from there. for my needs i am very happy with it so far.

Yeah many people brag about how the 4.0 is indestructible, but the 2.5 is just as good or better when properly maintained.

It's all depends on the owner, regardless of 4cyl or 6cyl engine. Those who regularly keeps up with the routine maintenence(oil,plugs,brakes,etc..) usually boasts of high mileage low problems engines.

Yeah you're right. My point is you always people saying the 4.0 is indestructible and things like that, but the 2.5 is just as capable of doing so.

I bought mine new in 2000, and have only had to replace things around the motor , like smog stuff etc... Still have same starter alternator, water pump, etc at 145,000 miles. Best vehicle I have ever owned. According to wikipedia, the 4.0 is based upon the 2.5, and the 2.5 was engineered specifically for performance, and durability to be put in Jeeps. Just put on aftermarket performance mods, and you'll be able to keep up in traffic.

Thanks to everyone!!!!! From what I was reading on the spec's, if the 2.5 had 2 more cylinder's, it would be the 4.0.
I had a 84 Cherokee with the 2.5 and it ran great and had lots of power. My 1999 Wrangler is a quick thing and I don't think I would want to try a 4.0 in it. Afraid it would get away from me!
I bought my Wrangler with 152,000 miles. Paint's a little chipped but other than that not too bad. Carfax report was good too.

Not going to make it a project by lifting or any of that. Just something to drive back and forth to work and need 4WD. I'm retiring my 1993 Cherokee with the 4.0. It's been great! sell it to my daughter.

It depends on what you're going to do with your Jeep. On the dirt and gravel Forest Service roads I like to ride my 2.5 is as good as a 4.0 anytime since speed isn't a factor. On the freeway the 2.5 does slow down a bit on some of the hills in the Siskyous, it won't do 70 up some of the grades but will hang onto 50 on the steepest. As an ex-charter bus driver I'm pretty used to downshifting and taking it easy on the upgrades. The 2.5 is a bit lighter weight, gets a bit better gas mileage, has a bit cheaper maintenance cost with two less jugs and is reliable. If you do a lot of freeway driving and need a bit more speed and acceleration then the 4.0 would be the better choice.

i have a 2001 with 130xxx and i havent taken it off road yet but on the streets it will run great but when im on the high way and going up a hill it will not go over 60mph. any suggestions as to why it does this?

yes,, it's a 3200lb box & powered by a 150ci engine. i love mine. & i can baby it for some good mileage..

Mine has 143K and I hate it. They are severely underpowered for the weight of the jeep. The 4.0 gets almost as good of milage and has the power to actually pass someone if need be. Also a 2.5 engine is hard to find and expensive....4.0's are plentiful and half the price. I just bought a 4.0 TJ just to get away from the 2.5 nightmare.

Always funny to read these posts hating the 2.5. Tell me, did it suddenly lose power after you bought it?
If you hate the power output, why did you ever buy it to start with? I personally have never bought a vehicle of any sort I wasn't absolutely thrilled with beforehand.
And no the 4.0 isn't almost as good of mileage. 4-7 mpg 25% in many cases the 2.5 is better, that's not close in my book.

So.....Please tell us how you really feel?

Although passing on the freeway is problematic, it handles 70mph fine and street driving is acceptable. Of course performance will suffer(on any jeep) once you start adding extra weight like larger tires, aftermarket bumpers,carriers,winch, etc....I disagree with the hard to find parts for the 2.5 motor. Jeeps in general are hard to find in the local salvage yards. BTW,I didn't buy the jeep for it's 1/4 mile times.

Not sure if serious...

My wrangler has a well running 4.0l and it is the slowest accelerating thing I've driven besides a forklift.

But lots of potential for power this OHV iron block has.

I drove the 4.0 today and the difference is more extreme than the numbers. The 2.5 won't even scratch in first on dry pavement. The 4.0 scratches in 2nd(geared higher than the 2.5).
In all seriousness thou the 4.0 has enough power to merge on those short on ramps and evade highway stacking. Go test drive a healthy 4.0 and than come back here and argue about how a 2.5 is G2G.

Mine will scratch on dry pavement. I just did a mpg test on mine too. I burned through almost a half a tank driving 110 miles, mix of highway/stop and go. That is 13-14 mpg, and that is with a mixture of some 10-15% ethanol (corn) in our local gas. In the winter, without ethanol, I get 17-20 MPG, with 30" tires. I hear folks complain about getting 7-10 mpg highway in their 4.0.

Scratch???? I suppose you are talking about spinning the tires, my question is why would you want or need to? I don't know if mine could or not, never been inclined to try. My point is its still a Jeep, gets better mpg, is as offroad worthy as the 4.0 and being smaller is easier to work on in the engine bay (more room). I don't need to do 70+ at any time so it suits me just fine.

I have learned its pointless to try to change people's view....It is what it is. But they can't argure that at least our oil changes and spark plug tune ups are cheaper.

It will offroad just as well as a 4.0.....at least for what I do which is mild crawling and trail riding. You won't really notice the power problems much with in town driving either. The 4.0 makes a huge difference getting up to highway speeds. My 2.5 does turn the wide 31" BFG's just as well as the narrow stock 31".
My biggest issue is parts. I can buy a low mileage 4.0 for $500-1200 all day long....they were put in metric shit ton of those crappy cherokees. I can't find a 2.5 motor for under $1,500.
Dextreme should know this.......call B&R and see if they even have a 2.5L engine available. Ask them how much if they did have one....

The 4.0 is the way to go if you don't mind losin 2-3 mpg because IT will last longer than the 2.5 with proper maintenance since its a bigger bored six cylinder it will suffer less from exhaustion after years of use since it is more tolerant.

Wrong!!! With similar maintenance, the 2.5 will last just as long.

I dont want to say you dont know what your talking about, but most Jeep owners know that 'stock' tires are 29", not 31"s, as far as the 4.0 being better, I will meet you in Moab on labor day, bring your 4.0 and I'll show you the advantage to not spinning your tires when I crawl right around you

There is a thread here where people post their milage, do a google search if you cant find it in this sear ch, you will find out very quickly that the milages are very comparable in both engines, they last roughly the same milage all things being equal, makes you look kind of silly and biased without the knowledge to back it up. The 2.5 is just as good as the 4.0, no better and no worse, its all about how you drive it and how much skill you have to get your Jeep to do what you would like it to. If you have owned 2.5s that havent lasted, as I certainly hope you have to justify your statement, perhaps you simply cant drive it properly.

look at all the arguing like little bitches, listen, they are both great motors or they wouldn't keep using them, I personally have and prefer the 4.0 so the extra power is there if and when you need it and at some point you will and wish you had the 4.0. I had a 90 YJ with a 2.5 and almost 200K on it and it did great as well, however you do miss the power from time to time. So let me ask this, if there were to identical Jeeps side by side for sale, 1 with a 2.5 and 1 with a 4.0 what would you buy, assuming pricing was similar?

Yeah obviously there are sore losers here that are not happy with their purchase, to OP: try both engines out and see which you like more.its the only way.

Yeah I would like to have a 4.0, it has some great advantages. I just don't like the posts where people say the 4.0 will last longer. With good maintenance, the 2.5 will last just as long.
