2000 Rear End Noise

Greetings all on my first post. I am a new old newbie to this site. I just purchased a 2000 Sahara with 69,000 miles. Good shape, never really off-roaded and mostly a highway queen. This is my third jeep but has been 8 years since my last TJ.

I have read most all of the posts regarding the pinion gears and etc that could be causing a growling from the rear area so I don't mean to appear as having not read them. Most informational. My real question is if the growling (nearly same as tires but louder) I am hearing in the rear-end is the pinion gear assembly, does it seem unusual that this would happen at this mile marker on the odo? I went today and and had all fluids changed but to no avail. The growling seems mostly on acceleration or cruising speed, if I clutch and coast it seems to dissapate. U-joints are all tight and there is no movement if I shake the rear wheels in and out. It seems to have come on all of a sudden as well.

Any comments are greatly appreciated.

I had this happen with a Grand Cherokee with Dana rear at 50K miles. The Jeep dealer wouldn't even assist me in getting Jeep to pay for 1/2. Good luck.

What ended up being the repair that you had to do?

My 2000 TJ does the same thing. Its done it since Ive had it and was told "its normal"???? Mine is more of a whinning sound and is barely louder than the tires. No play in the axle and u-joints are good. It will be interesting to see what others say........

Thanks for the post. Thinking back to my last TJ (2001) I am hoping this is just one of those normal sounds that I am not used to yet. Does yours go away if you clutch and coast? Assuming it is a 5 sp........
