My 2000 TJ Sport, 4.0L began making a whistling sound right at the end of the last winter, but went away during the entire summer. Now that the mornings are cooler again, the whistling sound begins about 3-5 minutes after I start up, but then disappears after driving for about 15 minutes. If I go out during the day when it's warmer it doesn't happen. The sound gets pretty loud at times before it goes away, is air flow related and it definitley comes and goes with the colder temps. Any thoughts? I am not very savvy when it comes to vehicle diagnosis and repair, so any responses with in simple terms and detail would really be appreciated! Thank you!
Next time you hear said whistle take and spray some starting fluid around the throttle body. If the idle changes then you have a leaking gasket. It can be replaced in about 15 mins.
You may also want to tighten the intake manifold, I had the same whistle you are speaking of, The variance of heat from the exhaust and the intake caused the leak over time. It's a pain to get the back bolts near the firewall but once I got to them that did the trick.
It took me a week to find it after trying everything else.... Good Luck
