2001 TJ Auto Trannsmission Question?

Guys, my son has a 2001 TJ 4.0, 60th anniversary edition with an auto tranny. The question is, could this thing have a 4 speed auto instead of the 3 speed (32RH I think)? When I drive it, it seems to shift into overdrive around 45 mph. We have 3.07 gears still and 33" BFG A/T's and run decent on the interstate at 65 or 70 mph. I'm just trying to figure out what exactly we have for possible regearing if necessary. Thanks again. How can you tell by looking at the tranny if it is a 3 or 4 speed auto?

Your son's TJ has a 32RH transmission which is a 3-speed. That extra "gear" you're hearing when the rpms drop 150 or so is not actually a gear, it's the lock-up torque converter locking the torque converter. That stops slippage between the engine and transmission which causes the engine rpms to drop which can make some think it's an overdrive or 4th gear ratio which it does not have.

Thanks so much again Jerry. What gears would you recommend for the 33's and the Dana 35C?

For 33" tires and your 3-speed automatic, 4.10 would be sweet.
