I've got a 2001 Wrangler, 4.0 Auto, When I take off from a stop Im getting a harsh clunking noise, I thought from the front, but when outside the jeep it sounds like the rear. Also does it if I move forward a little bit then put it into reverse it clunks once.

I thought U-joints so I put new ones in but it still does it.

I took it on the highway and got up to about 50 mph, let off the gas then apply it again and it clunks, then feels like the whole jeep shifts sideways a little bit.

Im lost on where to look now, any help would be wonderful.

Thanks,
Shane

Look at the rear trac bar see if there is any play there. Only other thing I can think of is to also open the rear axle and check the spider gears

Mine was doing the exact same thing and it was the rear track bar where it bolts to axle. The bolt hole was egg shaped letting the rear move side to side. I just drilled it out and put a larger bolt in it.
