My '98 2.5L manual does the same thing. Usually when I don't give it enough gas. But I'll let someone else chime in if they have more experience or suggestions.

My 97 has a rattle.... I spent a while emptying all my stash holes of change and screws.... Until I realized it's my shifter that rattles... Just turn up the radio

The rattle I'm referring too (and the one I'm assuming the OP is referring too) is more of a mechanical rattle down in the tranny tcase area. Not the shifter, I fixed that rattle by replacing my broken shifter boot and tightening up the shifter knob.

I've replaced both the boot and the shifter knob, and still get that damn rattle.... I've been under there and checked it out and all seems pretty good. Some days it does it, others not at all, I can't track a pattern on it.
Does it cease if your hold onto your shifter? When I first bought her, I had to tighten the Tcase linkage, that rattled like hell.

Same here. And very infrequent like the OP said. It's hard to describe it because there's no real pattern.
