2004 Jeep Unlimited 4WD V6 4.0 transmission problem

Hey new to the forum and was wondering if anyone could give me a general idea or guess as to what happened to my transmission. Was driving fine, pulled over and went in the store. Came out backed up, put it in drive and as soon as I got going I heard a horrible grinding noise. so I stopped, did it again and it did the same thing. I let it run one time to second gear and it completely stopped. Ran fine in second third and so forth. a few shops quoted me at best 1500, at worst 2500. I was just wondering if anyone had any idea what it could be. One mechanic said its a "band" between gear 1 and 2 that problem broke? Anyhow any input would be greatly appreciated.

The 2003-2006 4 speed auto transmission is the 42rle, and it does not have bands. Did you check the fluid level with the vehicle running?

Dont let a shop fix it as you can get a rebuilt one from autozone with 3 year warrenty for $1649.00 and just install it yourself. Im pretty sure you could buy a brand new one from mopar for around $2500

Yeah I checked the fluid with it running. When I'm going in first it just sounds like grinding. Just baffles me it'll go thru the gear and every other gear is perfectly fine.

Unfortunately this guy never checked back in with a resolution post. 2005 4spd automatic problem HELP!

I cannot be of any help beyond the simple stuff with it. Do you have a service manual? There's a troubleshooting section in the transmission section. I hope you get it fixed.
