2004 Rubi Help!

Hey everybody. As you can tell i'm new to the site. Hell I don't even own a Wrangler! I am searching craigslist and other car sites for a Rubicon though, and I need your help! I have found a nice looking 2004 Rubicon with all the off road jazz.

Hell i'll just stop talking and let ya'll see it.

http://charlotte.craigslist.org/cto/4360885985.html

Please tell me what you guys think. I am new to the Jeep world but i know a slight amount about suspension lifts and what not.

All of your comments are welcome!

Thanks in advanced

i say pass. it's too expensive. it has some crappy parts on it. it has a k and n filter on it. the guys listing the part costs like he expects someone to add the full price of the new parts to the vehicle price. he doesn't say what kind of winch it is and i can't tell but I'm guessing its Chinese. also its hard to tell on my phone but are those fake headlocks? come on...

Looks clean and well taken care of. He will negotiate in person. He wants to sell it. I'd go offer him Kelley blue book and explain modding vehicles is not a cost effective thing to do when you sell based on his new project he should know this. Not trying to be funny but it looks like a mall crawler. Like he just bought stuff no rhyme or reason. In my negotiating I would focus on the Jeep it self and hint many times you have your own mods in mind making him feel you don't really give a poo about what he's done just the vehicle. If he won't take blue book move on. Of course have it looked at if your not mechanically inclined.

He states it's a warn 9k. The junk parts like rubicon express lift and all the smittybuilt stuff just detracts the value from stock parts in my opinion. Miles are high for the price around here, but that's here. If it were stock and had <60k miles it'd be worth 13-15k here depending on condition.

Thanks for the help fellas. I've been in the market for a Wrangler for a while now and i'm trying to find a good deal! I've talked to the guy on the phone and haven't got to see it in person due to it being and hour away.

He's told me a few things that kinda turned me off.

Check engine light is on due to the previous owner cutting the catalytic converter and making it into a straight pipe. He stated to me that he has installed an oem exhaust back on but oxygen sensors are bad it in it.

Also he said when he got it the roll cage was bent, but he has replaced it.

Just think what is the most I would pay for that? Come in 2 grand lower. Negotiate up to what you will pay. If he don't take it walk. I became a big negotiator on deployments. Stuff isn't priced. I negotiated a dealer 2 weeks on my wife's new ram in 09 got an amazing price. I've made more deals as I've walked way than I can count. Hell you see it on pawn stars. They rip of everyone except the guy that's willing to walk. They either call him back and give him what he wants or he moves on not being a victim.

I love my smittybilt stuff. Served me well. Been dragging my jeep with the winch not wanting it to uprooting trees lately. It's made in China and has a strong dislike here from personal experience good stuff. Ya if someone breaks something they bitch unless it's a warn then they post about a rebuild that cost more than a new smittybilt. I've seen fictional stories behind photos on bumpers to exacerbate damage even. It's ludicrous. I know nothing about RE.

My issue with Smittybuilt (the stuff listed on the jeep in question is a perfect t example) is that none of it excels at function. What it excels at is price point and image (looks). That's it. Some folks are ok with that, in fact many people buy jeeps just for a "look". I'm just not one of them. There are other fenders and bumpers that improve on the stock stuff at several price points, even ones that compete with smittybuilt's prices. The smittybuilt bumpers and rock rails that came on my rig when I got it were cheaply made, poorly finished (though likely somewhat durable), poorly designed, and heavy. To each their own, but you asked so I explain my position.

Mine are tow rated front and back. Finished nicely, heavy for sure. And look nice to me. Poorly built? Like put together crooked? A weld broke? Explain please about this poorly built aspect. Guess quality was used and design. Just adjectives with no explanation which seems common in the smittybilt bashing.

A lot of the hate on Smittybilt comes from where's it's made I'm sure. I personally don't like the look of any of their products. But then, I run Metalcloak fenders so since when do I have good taste?? I will say that their tire carrier rattled like you wouldn't believe. This, I believe, from poor construction. The PO also installed the front bumper though, and that (mostly) held up to some hard hits that would have dented any tube style bumper. Bottom line, with the Smittybilt stuff that's already on it, if you like it you'd be fine to run it.

Back to your original question... I purchased mine for 16.5K 2 years ago, and it was two years newer and had half the miles yours does. So I would think this one is a tad overpriced. But we lived across the country from one another haha!

I swear I cannot find a decent wrangler. Everyone I see either has 100,000 plus miles or looks like it rolled off a mountain.

All of them are well above blue book too!!!

My PO had mine listed for 18K when I went to look at it. I talked him down to 16.5 and was still ready to walk away. It was only when my dad talked me into it that I was willing to pony up the 16.5k same day ( I was going to wait 24 hrs just because I was trying to be cautious). So if you really do like this one, I'd say there is no reason to not go take a look at it and talk to the guy. He may surprise you.

That's when you walk. No harm. Go in there with confidence. Control the situation. Walk away if need be. No harm no foul.

there's nothing wrong with the rubicon express lift. it's great just the control arms aren't worth it. better to get the one without control arms and get currie control arms. i'd be more worried about the k and n filter than the smittybilt stuff.

I paid $16k for an 04 rubi with 45k miles four years ago when I lived in Charlotte. That rig is overpriced given the mileage and mods.

Rollcages do not magically bend. That rig was involved in some type of "incident."

Don't get frustrated and keep looking throughout NC, SC, and GA.

Buy a clean stock rubicon and make it your own.

Hi, I'm also new to the whole wrangler ordeal and the website. I'd like to point out that one of the main reasons it may be expensive where you live is the fact that wranglers are nice, well built 4x4s and you live in mountain state. I have a sports TJ. Almost completely stock, and it costed me around $8,300. Then again I live in Florida, but just wanted to through ideas out there.

My uncle brought it to my attention that if you're willing to take time off, check a neighboring state or like in the Georgia/Alabama area, it's 2 states away(a bit ridiculous, but worth the car), then you might get what you're looking for. Just broaden your horizons.

For those miles, and the mystery roll cage damage, that price is too high. Out of the mods he listed, the only one that adds any value is the Warn winch. Do NOT pay for those other mods.

As a comparison, I bought my 2006 Rubicon with auto, cruise, a/c, etc etc a year ago. From a dealership. With a warranty. With 45,000 miles. I only paid $15,500 (dealership originally had it advertised for 18,500).

$17,900 is insane and way too high. Walk away. And be patient. It took me 2 1/2 years of searching to find the right one.
