2004 TJ overdrive clunk

2004 TJ with 66k 4speed auto. Notice a minor "clunk" or 'thump" when going into overdrive if I'm not accelerateing fast enough and the RPMs are low. Notice mainly in slower moving city traffic. I don't think there is anything wrong with the tranny other than bad engineering from the factory. Any recommended kits or do most just leave the OD off in the city? thks

Do you still have the factory ujoints? Have you check the rear ujoints yet?

More than likely they are the originals. I have the complete service history...

and they weren't changed out. The vehicle was just a regular city driven jeep that never towed anything or used offroad. This is my first jeep (recently bought) and I am trying to familiarize myself with it. Whatever needs to be done to it i will do myself as soon as i can get an OEM service manual. thks

Alsso..it doesn't have any play going into drive or reverse..

just that low rpm "sweet spot' when I am in slow highway traffic.

For the ujoints...well the origanals are not greasable. And are old, normal city stop and go driving can take it's toll on ujoints.

To check them just climb under the jeep and move the driveshaft around...any play in the joints...replace them.

A great replacement is Spicer 5-785x ujoint...stronger and direct replacement to factory joint.

As soon as I start mine, I take it out of OD. Works well for me in town and also on hills to 55mph or so.

Does anyone know if there is a module that can be purchased so I don't have to hit the overdrive switch? Just to make it automatic?

Try driving in 3rd and see if you get the same clunk. Could it be the torque converter locking up?

Here's how your transmission works as its fluid temperature changes. This may give you some insight into what you are hearing. Also worthwhile looking at your Owner Manual to see what it says about shifting.

You can go to the jeep.ca or jeep.com sites and download an Owner Manual in .pdf format. Makes for easier searching.
