2004 TJ rattling/grinding tranny noise

Hello all! New Jeep owner here, coming from the subaru world. I just picked up a 2004 black TJ, 5spd, 6cyl soft top, almost 60K on her. I've had it for about 2 days now, and there is a weird rattling sound coming from the tranny.

When I push the clutch in, sound goes away completely. As soon as a let the clutch out, rattling/grinding sound comes back. It seems to be driving fine, no issues taking off in first or second gear.

The dealer (Honda doh!) says the sound is normal for jeeps and they checked everything out. I have 3 months full coverage so if there is something *creeping* up, I want to get it taken care of.

Thanks!

A soft rattling sound when the transmission is in neutral and the clutch is not being stepped on is perfectly normal. Jeeps are not well insulated against sounds from the drivetrain and you're just hearing the normal sounds of the transmission spinning in neutral. When you step on the clutch, that stops the transmission from spinning and thus it stops making its usual noise. Also, the TJ's transmission is more or less a truck transmission so it is noisier than pretty much any normal car transmission.

And a big welcome to WF!

You might want to have them look at the fly wheel. That rattling can cause pre-mature wear on the plate and cause it to crack and fail. There should not be any loud rattling when in neutral.

If that were the case, the rattling would not go away when the clutch pedal is stepped on because the flywheel is spinning all the time regardless of the clutch pedal position.

The rattling I have been told could be the throw out bearing. I had an 02 and a buddy of mine who's a mechanic mentioned that's what it could be and now I just got an 04 with 63K on it and it's doing the same thing. I was told to run it until you have to replace it!

Odds are it isn't the throwout bearing. Throwout bearings don't typically rattle in neutral with the clutch out but our transmissions do.

I'm still running all the scenarios through my mind and since it has happened on both my jeeps maybe it is the tranny. So until something gives out it will rattle away!!
Thanks

your symptoms are signs of a bad throwout bearing that needs to be replaced.

My jeep makes the same tranny rattle..
Throwout bearing have weight on them when the clutch is pressed and would show the noise then, and I don't think it would be a rattle noise, more of a whinny bad bearing noise.
