Unhappy 2004 Transmission broken

Have an 04 TJ with a 5 speed and 4 cyl. Trans shifts harsh First to second and second to third (Grinds). Took it to a trans shop, they said trans is damaged internally. $1700 to $1900 to rebuild. What years will fit, maybe I can find a used one. Or maybe rebuild myself, not sure what model trans I have. Any suggestions or maybe a used trans?

Dale.

Found out from the dealer that the transmission I have is a NV2550. Went to another reputable trans shop, they test drove it, the tech was surprized that there is a problem with this trans at such low milage, 26000 miles.

He suggested hooking up some test equipment to listen to the internal noise as it is driven to further diagnose what the problem is! They get $75.00 for that test unless I go ahead with the repair then the test is no cost.

However just to remove the trans and transfere case is expensive.
