Give us some more info. Does it make the sound the whole time you drive it? When did it start doing this? Can you tell where the sounds is coming from on the axle itself?

It started about a month ago it does it all the time no matter what speed. To get it to stop I have to jerk the steering to the left and it will stop for a few minutes. It sounds like it is coming from the passenger side. I took the drive shaft off and am now driving in 4 wheel using only the front. When it happened there was a loud thud and I could not move until I put in to 4 wheel.

well few things come to mind... Worst would be busted gears in the housing.. Take the cover off and see what there. 2nd would be busted shaft. 3rd parking brake or brakes stuck, caliper (assuming rear disc) frozen.
