2005 4spd automatic problem HELP!

Well I drove on the freeway and came to a stop at the bridge and I heard a loud pop.

When I started moving and pulling to the side all I heard was grinding and gurgling noises in first gear.

As it changed gears the noise dissipated and all is fine at speeds over 30mph.

However when I start from a stop I still hear a grinding type noise in first gear; afterwards it rides smooth as butter and shifts fine.

Any suggestions to what it is?

I am thinking its has something to do with the torque converter?

Are there any known issues with this? and what can I do to fix/diagnose it?

I cant take it to a shop due to finances and can pretty much R&R it myself if I know what the cause.

TIA

Torque converter doesn't lock up until approx 35-45 mph...I'd think if it was related to the torque converter, it would grind clear up until that point regardless of what gear it's in. Something's definitely broken though...you need to figure out a way to pinpoint the source of the noise...at least then you'd know where the problem is and what can be ruled out. I'd guess it's in the transmission.

and pulling to the side. Please explain, does the jeep now pull to one side at low speeds? that could be a LS differential problem.

Sorry. I meant pulling to the side off of the freeway. The jeep drives normal after 2nd or 3rd gear..

I feel almost betrayed 60k and it broke down. Especially when I really take care and maintained it.

sounds like something came apart. you can loose first gear and still be fine in others. your trans has alot more to it then the older hydralic transmissions.

at 60k are you still under warranty? band adjustment or any other real adjustment is pretty much not done on comp controled transmissions. Id say get some quotes on repair. I just replaced a 5 speed auto on a ford ranger that was 4x4. took 2 days and we saved thousands.

What happed to your trans?

I got the Truck used from a honda dealer. They wrote down 7/70 drivetrain warranty on the buyers guide. I called jeep they said they dont have that warranty. Im fighting them with it. I read that the 42rle does not have adjustment bands. I knew I should have got a 6speed TJ. Repairs would have been way easier.
