2005 TJ 4.0 Vent control!!

Hello, i have a 2005 TJ 4.0, i have had it for about 2 years and now all of a sudden the nob that is suppose to control the which vents you want air coming out of doesnt work? Its stuck on defrost, i can rotate the nob but it stays on defrost. The other Volume nob works as i can select the intensity of the air flow as well as the cold-to-hot nob? Any ideas? Fuse maybe? Thanks!

The vacuum doors (blend doors) on the unit are bad.

I just had this happen with my 05, in the engine compartment around the front of the throttle body (not on the throttle body) you may notice a nipple sticking out that looks clean... theres a little hose that slides onto that (the vacuum) use a small zip-tie or hose clamp to re-secure it

Pull the knob completely off and take a close look at it. Jeeps are natorious (sp?) for having that knob strip out and/or break. Anyways, that my experience.

I had the same problem with my 05. Definitely take a look at the vacuum lines. An inconspicuous line came off the manifold and I didn't notice it for a while. Just figured the thing was broken. But, the gas mileage had also gone down and the vents worked exactly the way you're describing. Once it was reattached, everything went back to normal.

Happened to me about 2 mos. ago. Raise your hood and look along the top firewall. You will see a few black vacuum lines. Lokk at where they attach. Some have a nipple in-line and the one end connects to the manifold. In other words, look for small diameter hoses that are not connected to anything. Re-connect and your good. Hope it helps.

Hi, I have an 05 TJ and the little black vaccum line is definitely detached from under the hood. I've looked high and low and can't find where it is supposed to go. Can someone please post a picture of this well hidden attachment point?

I found the culprit. On my 05 the nipple is on the side of the manifold across from the throttle body. Connected, wire tied, works perfectly! Thanks to all.

Everybody seems to be pointing to a vaccum hose, but on mt '97 t-j with factory A/C the samething happened (stuck on defrost) although, in my case I could hear the vacuum hissing as I was jockeying for position. It ended up being the door in the H.V.A.C. housing unit (behind dashboard) there are canisters with pushrods that control these doors that direct air flow. the door narrows to a point on one end so it can pass thru the housing,to the cam, pushrod, canister assem. this is where mine broke. Chrysler will make you buy a whole new housing ($200.00+) don't do it find a cherokee same years in a recycle yard it's identical I bought the whole housing for $25.00

It worked.

I've seen a sudden drop in my MPG over the past few days and couldn't figure it out and i smelled faint gas fumes in my exhaust. Then yesterday my vent output got stuck on defrost. Popped the hood and there on the left side of the engine was the hose. Plugged it back in and drove it home. The engine is running a lot cleaner now.

I had a couple O2 sensors going off on me... Is there any way these could be connected?

I reset the system by removing the batter but it came back on after about 80 miles... Guess that answers that question.

Vacuum line under the hood. Same thing happened on my 05' Rubicon. I used a small zip tie to secure the line to the fitting.

Also you'll notice you loose cruise control because they run off the same vacuum line.

Ok so I too only have fan on speed 3 and 4, as well as only defrost. Both cropped out over summer and since I don't have a/c didn't bother me much.

Went and picked up new blower motor resistor, Duralast with lifetime warranty for 26 bucks at autozone, AND also noticed my bare nipple under the hood.

The resistor is not what I thought, it's black with a long flat black piece, I was picturing an actual resistor, did I buy wrong part?

Now 2 questions.

1. Where is the resistor to replace?

2. I see the nipple but absolutely no sign of loose hose, could it of fallen off other end too?

Cool

I had the same issue. It was the nipple next to the throttle body. With out this forum, I'd still be looking. The fact that everything under the hood is covered in mud didn't help any. Thanks!

Its in behind the glove box. Right below this green big plug. You see it? It says something like Valeo and Mexico on it.

A shot from further away...

The big flat thing of it sticks into the air box so can't be seen when installed. There are two self tapping screws hold it in. Tight place to work.

Its actually three resistors in a pack. One for each speed except position 4 (high and wide open) I guess they locate it in the air box to dissipate the heat it probably puts off.

Mike how do I get the knob off? Do I have to take off the whole front panel? I had the same problem as everyone else, but fixed that with getting a new vacuum line adapter. Now my knob that controls the speed does not work until I manually push in on it. Driving a stick and pushing in the knob in bad weather to have a defrost doesn't work real well.

Before you spend alot of time and money take off the knob and switch it with the other one and see if it works. If it does get a new knob. I had the same problem and the knob had a slight crack which you could barely see, which would cause it to spin on the control!

Fubar,
What do I need to get the knob off, I have tried to pull it off but afraid to pull too hard. Do I have to remove the faceplate first?

The knob just pulls off, new one pushes on.

LOVE this Forum. 2005 Wrangler X 4.0L. Only blowing air through defrost vent. Found this thread in two minutes. Vacuum line was disconnected on right side (facing engine) under the throttle body due to split vacuum fitting. None of my vacuum fittings in the tool box fit so had to go to parts store. Replaced in two minutes. LOVE this forum! I was going to start by tearing into the dash board...

New resistor is the way to go EMP.

I have an 05 also.. Have experienced both of these problems

Quick trip to WF and they were sorted.
