2005 Unlimited-Bad Front Tire Wear-Question

Wife and I test drove a used 2005 Wrangler Unlimited today. 6 cylinder, 6 speed manual, 55,000 miles, clean looking. The Goodyear Wrangler tires on the back were even wear with about 50% life. The front were really worn on both the inside and outside of each tire. The very centers of the front tires had 50% tread. never seen tires wear that way---odd. On the test drive I could feel a very slight vibration/roughness at normal street speeds. Never got on the freeway. The Jeep as a whole ran great.

Since my current Wrangler is a lifted and bumpy riding old 93, I am not familiar with the newer long wheel base model the unlimited is. ---- My jeep mechanic is 100 miles away from this used car lot. ------ Can anyone give me some advise on this 05 Unlimited in general, and the front tire issue in particular.---Thanks

Previous owner took corners to quickly.
Under inflated tires.

Could be a few things.

Thanks-----Ya that is what we thought at first. I was just concerned if that year/model had a history of that problem, like constantly needing alignments or some other design flaw.
Of course in the back of your mind is always, did it have a bad accident.

Yep, I agree with distorted, under inflated and not rotated often, if ever....

Yep, sounds like lack of rotation and/or air pressure. I'd be looking it over for other signs of lack of maintenance... pull the oil cap and look for sludge, take a good look at the condition of fluids, etc.

So many people don't report accidents to keep their insurance low, I wouldn't trust a carfax report as a tell-all if the vehicle has had previous issues.

I 100% agree. (for example the front of my jeep has been repainted...why? I have no clue....but carfax says its clean....)

I have dealt with enough body shops that I can now spot a typical respray a mile away, I looked at the front end everything was straight so I figured it was no big issue.

They put on new front tires today and "said" they would have the front re-aligned. We will drive it again and check out fluids and maintenance issues.

My '05 suffers from the 55-60 MPH death wobble, which can chock the tires, but all over. That may be the "slight vibration" you are feeling. If anything wears on the suspension (shocks, damper, tires), you can expect it to get worse.

However, I would say under-inflated tires would create the wear you are describing.

THANKS ALL-----Went back today and checked it all out in much more detail. This Jeep unfortunately was really neglected by the previous owner. The oil looked really dirty and low. The front diff and the tranny were leaking fluid. Lots of stuff that I did not see the first time around. Thanks all for your impute. We will pass this one up.

The stock Goodyear GS-A tires that came with it are crap, and prone to uneven wear, if you let it sit for awhile the tire develops a flat spot and vibrates like crazy going down the hi way. Goodyear discontinued them, thank goodness. Do the research on the tires
