Question 2nd gear growl?

I have an '03 Sahara, 4.0, 5-speed manual tranny...If I get on it while in 2nd gear, there is some roughness and a slight growl in the transmission...it doesn't have this "problem" in any other gear...A mechanic who works on Jeeps said that the second gear and reverse are common problems with the standard transmission...Anyone know if that is a fact an if so, when the transmission gets rebuilt, will they use a better quality gear? I suspect that the gears in the transmissions are probably coming in from whoever gets the low bid. There may even be a variety of manufacturers making gears for that transmission... Any info is appreciated...
