3.73 Gears

Newbie here, I've been following numerous posts about tire size, gearing and usability of our beloved Jeeps. I am new to all of this and have a question.

I have a 2000 TJ, I6, 5 speed manual. With 3.73. Diff ratios. What are my options as far as tire selections go. I would like to get away from the stock tires. I like the look of 31's. Thanks for your advice .....

i wouldn't go bigger than 31s with 3.73s. that's also as big as you should go with no lift.

I realize that 31's are as big as I can go without further mods. But would they turn my hot rod into a slug??

With a 6cyl no. I did the same mod on my 4cyl and it was fine. It will throw your speedo off easy to fix though

33's with 3.73 is fine. You do down shift more on hills but it runs quite well all the same.

You can do 33's with your 5-speed and 3.73's, I run this everyday to go back and forth to work which is 30 miles each way mostly highway. I can cruise at 75 / 80 without any issue and plenty of power. If I come to a steep hill I will have to downshift to 4th and even 3rd if its steep / long enough but that is few and far in between.

To run 33's you will need to do modifications to your suspension and / or a body lift.

My LJ speedo is spot on with 31's. Depending if you have the 30" tire package now or not (guessing you do), you might be fine.

What is the fix?
Changing the speedo gear in the tranny?

My Build Sheet says that mine came with the 30" tire package.

Since I'm running 31s, and mine is an automatic, does this combination make mine a slug, too?
