3 catalytic converters?

Hey, i'm not too car savvy but when looking at my 04 wrangler rubicon, it seems as if i have 3 catalytic converters? One thats before the muffler, and then two running up to the headers or near them? If that is so, am i able to switch out the one before the muffler with a hi flow cat without having to change the two that run up to the headers and are there any o2 sensors i have to worry about?

Here are the ones im assuming would be before the muffler, (whats the difference between oem grade and the normal? is there a sound, mpg, performance, lasting, etc difference between the two?)

23297 - MAGNAFLOW Performance 49 State Direct Fit Catalytic Converter for 00-04 Jeep® Wrangler TJ with 4.0L & 2.5L Engines - Quadratec

vs

Magnaflow 49038 - MAGNAFLOW Performance OEM Grade 49 State Direct Fit Catalytic Converter for 00-04 Jeep® Wrangler TJ with 4.0L & 2.5L Engines - Quadratec

Here is the one that looks like it has 3 cats? It looks to already have the catalytic converter in the two links above attatched to it? (this one is expensive thats why im trying to find out if i can do one of the above)

Magnaflow 49690 - MAGNAFLOW Performance 49 State OEM Grade Catalytic Converter for 04-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ & Unlimited with 4.0L - Quadratec

Any help and clarification would be much appreciated!

There are no 02 sensors measuring the cat before the muffler, you can remove completely if you want and it wont throw codes.

yes you have 3 cats. the two next to the motor are monitored by O2 sensors. the one upstream of the muffler is not monitored. removing any of them will not produce anything useful. "high flow" cat really doesn't matter on your 4.0L. it's slow breathing and anemic anyway, it doesn't even notice the cats.

the first two you posted say they are for 00-04. 00-02/03 used a different trans mount and different cat hanger than 03/04-06 did. If you want a bolt-up product, get a one piece downpipe with all three cats on it for a late model.

the products you listed are also greatly overpriced. Check out Walker Exhaust and Eastern Catalytic.

May I ask why you are changing them? The return (performance) on investment is minimal to none.

Yes you can replace the main cat without doing the others

That gain will soon drop back down to nothing.

OP, you can replace that cat with something else but unless it's clogged I wouldn't bother. You won't gain a thing.

Even if it does drop back down to nothing, the sound that you get from it is well worth it some may disagree but to me it really shows other people you mean business

you can probably already tell but I haven't had a jeep as long as most people, and I'm much younger than most of too so throwing a flowmaster on my TJ is a pretty big deal to me Haha

I was just wanting to replace it because I've heard that it makes your exhaust louder, which I am welding up a super 44 on Thursday, if I were to remove the third cat and add a straight pipe all the way to the muffler would I get jewed by Virginia emissions? Also I'm assuming that would make it louder?

The sound of your car is a good indicator that "you mean business?" Good luck in life my friend.

I also don't have a rear cat but it has nothing to do with how much business I mean. Regardless of all of that business talk, don't waste your time OP.

a muffler on a TJ doesn't give you more horsepower, more torque or any performance benefit. it just makes more noise. as long as you like the noise, all the best to you.

but if by "showing you mean business", you mean it shows that you have an outdated, noisy, underpowered tractor motor....then business is good.

Personally, I want my Jeep as quite as I can get it. nothing sucks more than waking up at 6am while camping in the middle of some beautiful wilderness to some moron romping on the throttle.

I doubt it because like lj04 said the third cat (behind the muffler) doesn't have an o2 sensor on it, so you can pass emissions tests and yes it makes it a lot more louder plus I got $61.00 for the cat when I went to a scrap metal place.

Emissions on your vehicle is done by the OBD2 port which reads for codes, removing the third cat will not trigger any codes since there is no O2 sensor checking on that cat.

Thanks for the info, I might have find someone with a welder so i can do that as I know it's "illegal" to tamper with a working cat.

I cut it out just don't have a welder to weld in a pipe and I don't know how much shit i would get from the welding shop for doing that. So I might just look for a local Jeeper who does have a welder

I doubt they'd care.

I hate how loud my stock exhaust is with all cats in place. Any ideas on how to make mine quieter? I mean whisper quiet like a hybrid. I want mine to sound like a yawn when I hit the throttle. No that tells people I mean business

You guys are hilarious. I removed my rear cat because it was clogged up and installed a freeflow muffler as the stock one was on it's way out. Like the others say it makes it sound different but that is it. No mpg or performance to be gained unless your cat is clogged. If you like it louder, do it. I like the nice low rumble it makes while i feather the throttle. It could be a matter of preference or I might just be a 15yo in a 34yo body.
