4.0 chugging and cutting out

hey all, im new to jeeps and ive already got an issue.....this should be fun.

im getting this cutting out when in 3rd about 2000-2500 rpms. i can avoid it by giving less throttle.....problem is.....i need to drive uphill sometimes. it feels exactly like running out of fuel. i went wheeling this weekend and i noticed fuel leaking from the top of the tank when we hit the trail. then it died on me once after running for about an hour on the trail. i let it sit for 5 minutes and it was fine the rest of the trip.....untill it started to cut out. the fuel leak seems to have stopped but i think its because its not full anymore.

so......do i have a fuel delivery issue? or should i be looking elsewhere?

sounds like a clogged cat, but can be many things. have you done a tune up recently?

a tune up is always a good start. they differ year to year on whats needed. i think the fuel filter is in the tank, making it a bit more difficult

I would add an air filter to your list.

ive got a k&n intake and i did just clean and oil it last friday. i think im going to have to drop the tank anyway to look at the leak so i will do a filter while im in there.

I am also a new Jeep owner an am experiencing the same problem. I did a tune up last week(plugs, wires, air filter) and now all a sudden the Jeep starts acting like it is running out of gas at times. Usually only happens at high RPM's. I haven't notcied any gas leaking but I did smell it as i was pulling into traffic the other day.

Check the cat, it is glass inside. High RPM's would cause more backup of exhaust, and engine malfunction, from an internally broken cat. Off roading and shaking, that glass cat, could cause it to break internally. Maybe a few rocks, landed on it, while driving over them, when off roading. It may seem like a fuel problem, but actually it may be an exhaust problem after burning the fuel, caused by a internally broken cat. Especially if you have a engine check light, this is the first sign.
Shake the cat, and make sure it isn't jiggling inside.
