4.0L Sputtering at idle

Just picked up a 99 Sahara for the girlfriend. First Jeep so help me out as a retard. Runs good, but randomly at idle it goes real low and surges idle like its tryign to go back up but drops. Vibrates the whole jeep. Not like wow holy crap bad, just not idling right or almost not getting fuel. You can rev it up and cleans up but goes back. If you shut off and restart its fine and purs perfect. Has 132K on it, Has a new oil change and I plan on tonight checking fuel system. Hopefully a fuel filter helps. I think the lot we bought it from had it a long time, so guessing filter could be bad. Also exhaust smells like realllly bad gas. Thinknig its just fuel with some water in it from sittin. They had a clearence tag on it when I got it. Just put our first bit of fuel in it so i'll refill it later tonight and keep tryin to run good fuel threw it and put some high test in as well. Thinknig a little bit of injection cleaner additive or perhaps equivilent any suggestions there?

Any suggestions on what to check or what I should do to perhaps check this or just keep running good fuel threw it and an additive.

Try some sea foam it will help if there is a small amount of water in the gas and also helps the fuel system.

Simple things first. A bad battery or battery connections will make it idle rough or even stall, even though it's running. The alternator isn't enough to keep it running smoothly. And it isn't the fuel filter, which is part of the fuel pump inside the tank and they don't get plugged up. Another thing, bring it to a parts shop and have them check the computer for codes. Welcome to the forum and check battery/codes and get back to us.
