4.0L Valve tapping noise

Hi all,

I've got a '98 TJ with 135K on the 4.0l motor and it's recently developed a tapping noise off the valvetrain.

I pulled the valve cover and it seems like (used a stethascope + felt by hand) the noise is coming from the exhaust valve on the number 2 cylinder. The noise is pretty consistent at idle and through the revs. The pushrod doesn't seem bent in any way and I can't see anything visually wrong with the rocker assembly, so here's my question:

Is it worthwhile to throw the valve cover back on and run some additives through (to possibly free up the lifter) or do I start replacing parts at this point?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks all!

-Jeremy

I know the noise you are talking about. I do not have a fix for you but none the less my dad had a 93 grand caravan that it developed the same noise around 75K or so. Our mechanic said that it was a bad valve rod and that it should be replaced. Time went on and was running fine so we never did anything about it. The engine now has 170K and still running fine though you can still hear the same pinging noise. Good luck with the fix if you are going to try anything!

My 02 sport has the same tapping noise....my engine does not leak a drop of oil, and hardly burns any off between oil changes.
Sometimes, when I first start the engine, the tapping is louder, therefore, leading me to believe that it's probably an exhaust manifold crack. (common issue) When the engine heats up, the noise is still there, but not as noticable.
I've also noticed recently that if I'm sitting idle, and barely rev the motor up, the noise will actually go away. As soon as I let off the gas and bring it back to idle RPM, it continues the "ticking" sound.
I'm assuming mine is a crack in the exhaust manifold.

it is pretty common to have a slight tap noise in 4.0's, its not a problem. if the noise is loud, metallic or sharp then its a problem. my suggestion is put it back together, buy an engine flush chemical, use that, change the oil using a quality filter like wix (not fram) and maybe use a hi mileage oil like valvoline max life (what i use). i've also actaully seen results from lucas, i've used it, and know others. i will never endorse any other additive or gimick, i think they're junk, but lucas seems to make a difference.

Thanks for the insight guys! I'll put her back together and run some chemicals through and see if where it goes.

I'll post my results soon!

its a figure of speech, meaning the 4.0 engine lasts forever. btw a gas motor is broken in around 2 or 3 thousand miles.
