4 cylinder Engine Icon Goes then runs BAD!

My 2005 4 cyl. 6 sp. with only 2500 miles has bucked hard three times then acts like its running out of gas. The engine icon light came on and I limped home. When I got home the engine light was off. The next day it did it again but the the engine light stayed on. I took it the dealer and they said a vacuum hose broke. On the way home it did it again but the engine light went off. I took it back and they test drove it about 90 miles and couldn't get it to do it. I've now drive it about 200 more miles. It seems ok now but I'm leary to drive it.

Is it still under warranty? I would just not take it on long or remote trips for a few days, drive it and see what happens.

bad gas..??

possible that you got some bad gas, maybe got some water in it. Add a can of "dry gas" to the gas tank. It's cheap, can't hurt anything, maybe will help. Sounds like a fuel problem to me.

Another thought, was the weather really hot and humid at the time it acted up? Could be a vapor lock was causing the trouble.

I live in Palm Springs so it's always hot, 105 I think. Not that humid though. It did happen again yesterday and the red engine icon went on like usual but is still on. I'm taking it to the dealer again today. It suddenly just loses power and then cuts in and out. I'm always able to get home when it does it though. Hopefully they can get some code since the light is still on.

Turns out the ECU computer falsely register my jeep was in high altiude when it wasn't and was adjusting the fuel mixture accordingly. They change the computer the air sensor and something else (I can't think of it right now). The only way they found the problem was remembering the fix that helped another jeep in the past whose fault codes were similar. The factory rep wasn't any help. They asked things like, 'Has he serviced it regularly, etc.' Strange they would ask that when it only had 2000 miles on it and I had changed the oil anyway.

BTW, I've put 1500 miles on it since they changed the parts and it hasn't done it once.

Well, it just got hot here in Palm Springs and it did it again. I'm wondering if it is what someone suggested, vapor lock. I guess I'll have to pay the dealer's deposit and have them hook the monitoring equipment up to it.

The TJ's fuel injection system isn't normally suceptible to vapor lock. The next time it does this, quickly pull over and stop and do this... with the ignition key in the Off position, quickly turn the ignition key On-Off-On three times within five seconds and then WAIT patiently with the key in the On position. Do not turn it to the Start position, just to the On position. Within 4-5 seconds, a code or two should appear in your odometer. Once you have that code, it will be four digits with a P in front... like P1234, give us that code. That will give us a clue what's happening. Or heck, try it now as you might get lucky and still have the code stored in the computer if it happened recently enough.

I tried the day you posted but no codes still (the mileage display just blinked on and off). Just to make sure, Start in the off position then: On - Off - On quickly then back to the off position and repeat On - Off - On twice more?
At least it doesn't leave me stranded.

off - on - off- on - off- on - off - ON..... turn it to the on posisiont 3 times then once more and leave it on. THat should be the trick to get the codes.

Send a message via AIM to erickpl
Or go to Autozone and have them read the codes stored for no charge.
